Homily #150626n ( 07min) Play – Several weeks ago, Pope Francis used the passage of Jesus healing the leper, the Gospel of today’s Mass, to speak of the mercy of God. He said that God meets us where we are at, in our sin and selfishness, but does not leave us there. Accepting God’s mercy also means moving towards Him, and God gives us the strength as we step out to follow Him. Jesus is not cruel, and to leave a sinner in their sin is cruel. If we don’t see this, it is because we don’t understand what sin is. Let us all walk that path that leads from the Bad to the Good, from the Good to the Better, and from the Better to the Best, that is, to loving union with God Himself.

Ave Maria!

Today is divine Mercy Sunday and we are blessed to have Msgr. Charles Mangan preach on Divine Mercy at our conference last night. Listen to this remarkable conference that covers all the basic elements of Divine Mercy, what it constitutes and the indulgences the Church attaches to this devotion especially on Mercy Sunday in this Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis, from December 8th 2015, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, concluding on Sunday, 20 November 2016, Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King.

In this talk he covers:

Increased devotion to Divine Mercy and Divine Mercy Sunday. Increased devotion to Mary. So we can see the fittingness of Mary Mother of Mercy, who is getting us through otherwise dark times.

Pope Francis and a year of Mercy to focus on God’s Mercy toward us.

Mercy is a free gift that has to be shared. As we receive so we should give, and how this requires grace.

Steps toward Mercy:

  1. Awareness of someones plight
  2. Desire to help, render assistance

God extends this to us first, awareness and desire to help.

This help comes by way of supernatural grace.

Grace is extension of God’s love and mercy.

Usually by way of sacraments.

connected to this is the life of prayer, penance and giving alms (which is not just for Lent)

Most often sacrament of confession

But also Baptism which takes away original sin and any personal sins

need to stress the importance of sacraments when they are being forgotten, even Baptism

Fourteen Works of Mercy, seven corporal and seven spiritual

  • Corporal works:
    1. Feed the hungry
    2. Give drink to the thirsty
    3. Cloth the naked
    4. Shelter the homeless
    5. Visit the sick
    6. Visit imprisoned
    7. Bury the dead
  • Spiritual works:
    1. Instruct the ignorant
    2. Counsel the doubtful
    3. Admonish sinners
    4. Bear wrongs patiently
    5. Forgive offences willingly
    6. Comfort the afflicted
    7. Pray for the living and the dead

Mary as Mother of Mercy and Mother of Christ who is Mercy and so Coredemptrix and Mediatrix

Sr. Mary Faustina – Promises given to her from Jesus. On Divine Mercy Sunday

Confession takes away gilt of personal sin

Condition for receiving plenary indulgence which removes all temporal punishment due to sin.

Holy Doors of Year of Mercy – in every diocese, plenary indulgence given by going through the doors, doing a work of mercy, and fulfilling conditions

Apostolic Pardons or Blessings – plenary indulgence given directly by a priest.

Fr. William Casey gives the first homily for a retreat June 17 – 19 at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center called “In Our Lord’s own Words: The Divine Mercy” based on the words of Our Lord to St. Faustina. He covers the roots of the doctrine of the Merciful God in the Old and New Testament and then in St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and then Sr. Faustina. He makes the distinction between love and mercy. Love is unconditional but mercy is conditioned on our willingness to repent. The retreat is based on a set of CDs he recently published that compiles the Lord’s messages on this subject.

Fr. William Casey gives a talk for a retreat June 17 – 19 at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center called “In Our Lord’s own Words: The Divine Mercy” based on the words of Our Lord to St. Faustina that he compiled from her Diary and recorded on a set of CDs he recently published. This talk is titled “God Have Mercy on Us.” In the face of so much collapse of faith and morals in recent decades, Father exhorts us to ask for God’s Mercy and to lovingly and respectfully give people the message of the Gospel even when it may not be pleasant or convenient to do so. This is because the greatest mercy you can show people is to be concerned with their eternal salvation. We should relight the flame of faith by becoming saints. More notes below.

Amoris Laetitia by Pope https://w2.vatican.va/content/dam/francesco/pdf/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20160319_amoris-laetitia_en.pdf

In the video he mentions:

The bad effects of pornography on society

The prophetic words of Pope Bl. Paul VI regarding contraception in his encyclical Humanae Vitae:

  1. Increase in sexual immorality
  2. Marital infidelity, divorce
  3. General acceptance of Abortion
  4. Sexual degradation of Women seen in pornography
  5. Government coercion of new thinking. seen in no fault divorce, same sex marriage, etc

People create their own reality

Adam and Eve did this and we are repeating it

What do we do now in the face of general apostasy? Relight the flame of love starting with ourselves. We must become saints.

Mother Theresa, God does not call us to be successful but only to be faithful especially in tough times

Four points on Divine Mercy:

  1. We are created for unity with God this must be the focus, Sr. Faustina mortal sin alone will  separate
  2. God is all powerful. He will get us to heaven if we contribute
  3. God has a great love for you. will give you eternal happiness
  4. God is always faithful and wants us to be too and he will be faithful in giving eternal happiness with him

Must be faithful in the struggles in life, many temptations, peer pressure especially today. Trust in God’s goodness

Heroic virtue is the key, a grace from heaven that is very much needed. To access this gace:

  1. Habit of Prayer
  2. Meditation, reflecting on God
  3. Frequent worthy reception of the sacraments
  4. Avoid the occasion of sin.

Must remove things that lead to mortal sin. Do not presume on Mercy of God

If tempted use frequent confession.

Which gives us forgiveness of sin and increase of sacramental grace, strengthens us

God wants salvation of all, but we need to turn to him and trust in his mercy and his help.

Those who persevere, keep returning back to God, even if they fall every day, will find mercy.

But, must avoid making a pact with sin, becoming comfortable with it.

Caption on Divine Mercy by command of Christ, “Jesus I Trust in You”

Pope Francis – Church not a museum for saints, but a hospital for sinners.

St. Therese of Lisieux – If I had committed all the worst sins I would still not loose peace. But know the mercy of God and would run to him and he would fix everything

God loves each of us as if we are the only one alive.

Because he is all powerful has the capacity to be this concerned with all the billions of people in the world.

Confession after many years gives the lord his greatest glory.

Fr. William Casey gives the second homily for our retreat June 17 – 19 at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center. The retreat is called “In Our Lord’s own Words: The Divine Mercy” based on the words of Our Lord to St. Faustina that Father compiled from her Diary and recorded on a set of CDs he recently published. He reflects on Pope Benedict’s comment that 2017 will be a big year for the Church, which happens to be at the end of the Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis. Father points out how the one month of October of 2017 will be the 100th anniversary of the Russian Rev and of Fatima, and the 500th of the Protestant Reformation. He gives a summary of the difficult times we are in and then gives many quotes from the diary of St. Faustina, Bishop Dashe of Nigeria, Pope St. Pius X and Sr. Lucia to get a heavenly perspective on our problems and to see that the answer is to ask for God’s mercy, especially by praying the Rosary.

He explains what purgatory is, its scriptural basis and how it is merciful that God has created it in order for us to be prepared for heaven and live in the holy presence of God. He exhorts us to keep in mind the shortness of life and to live so that we are prepared for death and to pray for the souls of the faithful departed.

Fr. Alan reflects on mercy in the homily for Monday of the Second Week in Lent (Mar 09, 2020). Noting that Our Lord in today’s Gospel calls us to the practice of mercy, and that in the first reading, Daniel acknowledges sin, Father Alan points out that confessing sin is the prerequisite for receiving mercy.

The more insistent and urgent the messages from on high regarding mercy, the more we should understand the gravity of sin. To make it clear, in our times, recent popes have focused on both mercy and reconciliation, and Our Lord Himself gave to St. Faustina the urgent message of Divine Mercy, to “prepare the world for My final coming” (Diary of St. Faustina, 429).

“If my people will not submit, I shall be forced to let go the arm of my Son. It is so strong, so heavy that I can no longer withhold it.” Our Blessed Lady, La Salette, France, 1846
