Fr. Peter continues his discourse on the thought of Bl. John Duns Scotus. Scotus’ thoughts on the freedom of the will aren’t as shaky as some contemporary theologians would have us believe. He did not follow the heretical teachings of William of Occum. Scotus distinguished between the perfect will of God and the imperfect will of man, and we must be aware of this distinction when we attempt to compare God to ourselves. The basis of our personhood, our freedom, and our dignity lies in our will, and freedom itself is not license: it is the ability to guard and foster virtue, and it was never accomplished so perfectly in a human being as it was accomplished in Mary. Homily #100829 ( 13min) Play – Will we follow Him? Fr. Angelo Geiger preaches on today’s Gospel where Our Lord admonishes us to live a sacrificial, spiritual life and not be worried about things of this world. For as the Gospel states, the Lilies of the field which work not nor spin not are clothed by God more gloriously than Solomon. He points out that to not follow this basic spiritual discipline is to live inconsistently when so many follow harder discipline in the secular corporate world.

Newman-Scotus Symposium – Fr. Ed Ondrako asks how we might implement what the Pope asked for, to reconnect will and intellect?

Dr. Noone answers that the problem is rooted in Descartes by disassociating will from intellect. He was aware of Scotus and used his thoughts but ultimately subverted them. He covers the progress from Descartes and even sketches the reasons why Scotus is blamed due to misconceptions about him.

Fr. Ed adds that it is very heard to stay clear of misconceptions.

Dr. Noone reflects on the rarity of authors and philosophers to be free of preconceptions and pints to the exception of Etienne Gilson who saw right past the heavy bias against Scotus in the 1920’s and 30’s. And that it is sad that Scotus is not included in the great books program.

Fr. Ed further reflects on how this exposes a lack of knowledge of medieval history.

Sr. Mary Beth Ingham reflects on how challenging Scotus is to modern impoverished notions of thought and intellectual activity and even the notion of the person. Scotus does not hold to a real distinction between Intellect and will whereas Aquinas did have this distinction and led to a rather strict separation between the two.

Lecture 5 of the Newman-Scotus Symposium is by Rev. Dr. Fehlner: Scotus and Newman in Dialogue: Examples of Scotistic Affinities in Newman, the Will, the Critical Question (of Interiorization) and Faith

Fr. Peter first comments on Dr. Noone’s last talk that Newman and Scotus disagrees with each other on process of assent. But this is not the starting point. Going to God given the differences is difficulty. Scotus term simplicite simplex, Perfect being, that is God and so radically different. But they have a common starting point in their Christology and Mariology.

Fr. Peter mentions:

• Key is to find where Newman fits in the Franciscan view
  
• Primacy of charity is central.
• Scotus the metaphysician is also a good Phenomenologist in the sound patristic tradition, not of Ockham.
  
• Evidence of similarity not only in theory but also in the development of doctrine in Newman.
• Newman and Scotus are opposed to Kant and Hegel.
• Absolute primacy of Christ of Scotus
• Holiness as link between reason and faith.
• The personal responsibility for our decisions. It is a risk but a prudent one.
• Showing the radical differences between Position of Kant with that of Scotus.
• Relation to Kant is key since the perceived similarity is the major point of

Question and Answer:

What is the connection between Newman-Scotus and Lonergan or rather a disconnect? – Lonergan and K. Rahner and J. Marecel are in error in regard to Scotus and Bonaventure. They are more inclined to Kant and Hegel and has little to do with Scotus according to his own words. Newman had very little interest in the German philosophy of his time.

Also same in that Scotus can not be made into a pre-Ockham. He is a continuation of Bonaventure and the scholastic tradition. Ockham on the other hand is the first of the moderns. But Scotus does say that knowledge is not as mechanical as it is in the Thomistic sense. The reasonableness is not as restricted to the intellect but includes the will.

Lonergan-Newman connection – Lonergan states he read Newman many times. Fr. Peter says his interpretation is off, reflecting his Transcendental Thomism.

Fr Ed Reflects Rahner and Ratzinger where first of one mind and then after the council started to diverge and the differences need to be explored to get to the root of these questions.
