Homily #090101 ( 20min) Play – The Blessed Virgin Mary was created in order to become the Mother of God – Theotokos. She truly gave birth to the Son of God – and this is the touchstone of Religious Orthodoxy. Mother of the Mystical Body, Mother of the Church, Mother of the Redeemed – let us give glory, praise and honor to our Beautiful Mother on Her great Solemnity.

Homily #150101n ( 13min) Play – Father comments on the “mode of the Incarnation,” telling us that the second reading today, which contains the only reference to Our Lady in the writings of St. Paul, contains more food for meditation than it may at first seem. In particular, we can see three distinct truths in this short reading: that Mary is truly the Mother of God (while the Divine Word exists in eternity, it is truly God who is born of her, for She isn’t the mother of the human nature of Jesus, but of Jesus Himself), that Mary’s Motherhood is Virginal (Before, After, and During the birth of Jesus), and that She is the spiritual mother of us all (for She bore and birthed the “Whole Christ,” head and members). Let us be aware that Jesus comes to us through Mary, it is thanks to Her we can be united to God through Christ. Our Lady is not an obstacle which gets in the way, rather, She is the way God comes to us, and the way which we return to Him.

St. Cyril of Alexandria’s great contribution was his defense of the doctrine of Mary’s divine maternity, against the Nestorian heresy which denied the humanity of Christ. Christ is always at the center of every Marian doctrine. Jesus and Mary are inseparable: that is the point.

For the memorial of St. Cyril of Alexandria (Jun 27), Fr. Matthias focuses his homily on the question: “Why is it so necessary to acknowledge Mary’s different titles and privileges?” The answer: They tell us who God is.

St. Cyril of Alexandria (Bishop and Doctor of the Church) was a major contributor to the definition of the dogma of Our Lady’s Divine Maternity.

In the homily for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (Jan 01), Fr. Alan explains some of the Catholic belief about the divine maternity: the Son of God regards Mary as His Mother. She is the “full of grace,” chosen from before the time began, to be the one through whom God would unite Himself to humanity. Just as her humble fidelity recommended her to God in the fullness of time, to choose her as His Mother, so her humble fidelity is the condition by which Peace was once and will again be granted to us.

In the homily for the Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major (Aug 5, 2019), Fr. Alan relates the dogma of the Divine Maternity to Catholic belief in Christ, Son of God, and to faith in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, through which man may partake in the immortality of the Resurrection to come.

  • Note: the statement Father attributes to Pope St. Paul VI [6:25] seems to be a quote from St. Louis Marie de Montfort. (See article referenced below, “He who has not Mary for his mother etc.”)

Msgr. Arthur B. Calkins gives the first homily at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Crosse, WI on Oct 11, 2019, at our Symposium “Mary Coredemptrix: Why the Dogma?” where he explains how we need to focus on Mary whom he relates to the new earth, descending from heaven as a holy city as depicted in the book of Revelations in the readings today, and to the Annunciation. From this, he expounds on Mary’s Immaculate Conception and how she is the New Eve, the Handmaid of the Lord who could cooperate in a unique way with Christ’s work of becoming a slave to set us free. Upon this, the Coredemption of Mary is based, which ultimately rests on the Absolute Primacy of Christ. As such, to deny the Coredemption of Mary is to deny Christ as outlined by Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner.

This symposium took place at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe October 11-12, 2019 and had 8 talks, 2 QA sessions, and 2 Homilies. The theme was “Mary Coredemptrix: Why the Dogma?” and included a commemoration of the Marian legacy of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner. It was sponsored by the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in conjunction with Mark Miravalle and the International Marian Association (IMA)

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jan 01, 2021, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, on how Mary exemplifies humility, mercy, and charity and how these virtues are interrelated, forming a trifecta of virtues, consistent with her election by God to be His Mother. He explains that Love is the most important virtue, consistent with the Franciscan school of thought perfected by Bl. John Duns Scotus. To deny that Mary is the Mother of God is to fall into one of two heresies, Monophysitism, which denies that Jesus had two natures or, Nestorianism, which claims Jesus was two persons. The true doctrine of the incarnation is that Jesus has two natures, divine and human, harmoniously united in one Divine Person. We should be like him where our behavior outside of Church is in harmony with our behavior and profession in Church on Sunday.

Fr Elias Mills, FI gives the third talk for the retreat for our layperson group, the MIM, in the Fall of 2022, titled “5 Marian Stones,” 5 dogmas/doctrines of Mary. This talk discusses the 2nd and 3rd Marian stones, the Perpetual Virginity of Mary, and her title “Mother of God,” and how it integrates with the other dogmas and with our Marian spirituality.

About this series: 5 Marian Stones, refers to the five Marian Dogmas of the Catholic Church. Four have been proclaimed, Mother of God, Perpetual Virginity, Immaculate Conception, Assumption into heaven, and another that is proposed, Mary Coredemptrix (and Mediatrix, Advocate), which has a strong basis in tradition and in the magisterium. Spreading the knowledge of these dogmas and living the consequences of them by consecrating our lives to Mary forms the basis of St Maximilian Kolbe’s Franciscan spirituality, which the Franciscans of the Immaculate and the associated MIM follow.

About the MIM: MIM stands for Mission of the Immaculate Mediatrix. It is an apostolate of the Franciscans of the Immaculate (FI), that helps lay people participate in their spirituality, which is to live and promote unlimited consecration to Mary, the Mother of God and Immaculate Mediatrix.
