Faith-Reason Harmony Praised in Duns Scotus

Pope Recalls Franciscan Theologian on 7th Centennial of Death

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 22, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is proposing the Franciscan theologian Blessed John Duns Scotus as a model for believers and nonbelievers alike, due to his search for harmony between faith and reason.

Scotus, who died in 1308, was the subject of a papal letter sent in October to Cardinal Joachim Meisner, archbishop of Cologne, where the theologian was born. The Holy Father’s statement was sent on the occasion of a conference on the theologian held in November. The Latin-language letter was made public Saturday.

The Pontiff referred to Scotus, currently in the process of canonization, as the “subtle doctor” who, “associating piety with scientific investigation, with his refined and deeply penetrating ingenuity into the secrets of natural and revealed truth, became a light and example for the entire Christian people.”

“Firm in the Catholic faith, he labored to understand, explain and defend the truths of faith in the light of human reason,” the Pope continued. “He labored especially to demonstrate the consonance of natural and supernatural truths, which emanate from the same source.”

Benedict XVI emphasized both the theologian’s fidelity and submission to the magisterium and his love for the Virgin Mary — he was one of those who defended the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. The Holy Father also noted Blessed Scotus’ concept of theology as “more like contemplation than speculation.”

Scotus, he said, was a “great preacher of God as love,” a truth that “should be delved into and taught especially in our times.”

The life of Bl. Raymond Lull, Martyr, Third Order (1232-1315) for the June 30th Franciscan Saint of the Day. He was a high official of the court of Majorca of the Belleric islands who had a call to join the Franciscan Tertiaries where he started a school to learn the languages of Africa to preach to the Muslims. On a journey there he was martyred for the faith.
The reflection is on how we should a great appreciation of the value the Christian faith, use it well, and preserve and grow in it.

The Life of Bl. John Duns Scotus, Confessor, First Order (d. 1308) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Nov 8.  John Duns Scotus was born in Scotland in 1266 and became a professor of theology in Cambridge, Paris, and Oxford a generation after St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bonaventure and was instrumental in formulating the theological defense of the Immaculate Conception at a time when it was argued against by all other Doctors of the Church. He defended the sovereignty of the Pope over bishops and kings regarding the faith. He also defended the Christo-centric theological view called the Absolute Primacy of Christ vindicated by the feast of Christ the King.

Reflection is on the Immaculate Conception and how the Devil never had any power over Mary.
We should honor Mary for being Immaculately Conceived and avoiding all personal sin.
Ask her to help us avoid sin.

Light and Thought, Our ideas shape our life and sense of reality and those of others. He was known as the Subtle doctor who explained subtle distinctions of such things as the reason for the incarnation and univocity of being. But as subtle as they were, they had a profound influence on subsequent thought and teaching in the Franciscan order and the Church and influenced the devotions as well. Let us follow his example by turning to Mary to be enlightened to know her Son.
