Ave Maria!

Fr. Ben Luedtke gives the last of twenty-five conferences for his Eight Day Ignatian Retreat. The subjects he covers are: What we must do to attain the love of God, prayer should be open expression of love. His sufferings to attain our love and our response. Love as activated charity. Infused virtues.

About the retreat:   The retreat was conducted by Fr. Ben Luedtke who has condensed St. Ignatius’ classic thirty day spiritual exercises into an eight day retreat that makes this life changing spiritual experience more accessible to the average person. It consists of twenty-five conferences (recorded in this video series), which are used by those on retreat along with further reflections given to them as handouts to base their hour long meditations which they make after each conference. The typical day consists of three of these conferences, one in the morning, afternoon and evening. Fr. Ben also gave them private spiritual direction and Mass each day. The retreat took place at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center in Bloomington, IN from Oct 9-17th, 2016. Father usually gives these retreats at this retreat center in the spring and fall of each year. See his website for other times and places or to arrange one near you.

Fr Dominic gives the homily at Griswold, CT on Dec 26, 2019 on how Jesus suffers for sin from the start of his life. Life is not meant to be easy as with St Steven we will have much to offer God. Rely on God in trials.

The Life of St. Bridget of Sweden, Widow, Third Order (1302-1373) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Jul 23. St. Bridget of Sweden was born into a noble family, married to a devout prince having eight children, she and her husband joined the Third order, helped the poor, and went on pilgrimage to Compostella. After her husband died she practiced more poverty and austerity, founding the order of Our Savior, and then went to Rome, working for the return of the papacy from France.  She died soon after going on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Reflection is on the need to frequently meditate on the sufferings of Christ who died for our sins winning heaven for us and the graces to be able to imitate Him, making our sufferings in this life bearable. We should grasp the meaning of the cross and plant it deep in our hearts.

The Life of Bl. Elizabeth the Good, Virgin, Third Order (d. 1420) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Nov 20. Bl. Elizabeth the Good was called the anchoress due to her contemplation and foretold results of the council of Constance.

Reflection is on the sufferings of Crist and contemplating this helped Bl. Elizabeth to love Him, become a saint, and to bear our sufferings more easily.

The Life of St. Angela of Foligno, Widow, Third Order (1248-1309) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Jan 7. Angela was born in Italy and lived a dissolute youth until her time of conversion when she started to practice penance and devotion and after the death of her husband and many of her family and entered the third order. She had a great devotion to the sufferings of  Christ and grew in virtue, overcoming many temptations to turn away from virtue.

Reflection is on the benefit of temptations to grow in holiness.

The Life of Bl. Louise Albertoni, Widow, Third Order (d. 1533) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Feb 27. Louise was born of a wealthy family, married a pious man, and was widowed at 33. She dedicated herself to the service of God and entered third order, meditating on the sufferings of Christ and caring for the poor with her wealth to the point of often being needy herself.

Reflection is on loving God above all things and so loving all others.

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Mar 11, 2022, on the overabundance of the offering Christ makes for our redemption and that the source of most of his suffering is due to his knowing that people will reject such love. He desires us to be in heaven more than we do, and this lack of our desire is His suffering, and the souls in hell will suffer primarily because redemption was so generously provided but they ignored it.

Ave Maria Meditations

Consider how useful it is to think of the sufferings of Christ. There is no better consolation amid the sufferings of life. Are you being ridiculed and persecuted, have you been laid low by painful illness, is your soul worried and sorrowful, then look at your suffering Savior. Contemplate Him from the time He suffers the agony in the garden until He draws His last breath on the Cross.

What you are suffering, He endured in far greater measure, and what is most consoling, His suffering has obtained for you the necessary strength to bear your sufferings patiently and with merit. His death has affected our redemption, so that in time of direst need, when our soul is oppressed because of the sins we have committed, we may look up with confidence to our suffering Savior. “If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Just; and He is the propitiation for our sins”   (1 Jn 2:1-2).

Have you always had recourse to your suffering Savior?

+ Fr. Marion Habig, OFM
