The King of Love is Crowned with Thorns

Jesus, Man of Sorrows, those drops of Blood that flow down Your Face, those deep gashes caused by the thorns that circle Your holy head, make You dearer to me than if Your forehead shone with precious stones. Such signs remind me of the Divine love that burns in Your Heart for me. I love the noble, sorrowful majesty of Your holy Face. You reject the crown of gold and the rich robes of royal state, and accept instead a crown of thorns and the purple rags of mockery and scorn.

You consent to be a mock-king, a king of fools, only to be the real King of my soul. My thorn-crowned King, I adore You as my very God. I subject myself entirely to Your Divine Kingship of love. I would rather be a fool in the eyes of men for Your sake and have You reign over me, than be king of the world and be the slave of the prince of darkness. I adore You as the Conqueror of hearts, whose Kingdom is not of this world, but of heaven.

In the homily for Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent (Apr 09), Fr. Alan gives the homily on how we must take Jesus at word: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (Jn 3:14-15). “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM,” (Jn 8:28) but “if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins”(Jn 8:24).

We must look to Christ on the cross, lifted up that we might have eternal life, but we must believe and give witness, that others too might be saved.

God allows His creatures—who He wants to save—to suffer in order that they may awaken from proud delusions of self-sufficiency to the realization of their complete dependence on Him for all that is good. Suffering is a way we can be brought to our senses, and Christ was the first to accept suffering that we might know the Truth.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Feb 25, 2020, on how Jesus tells his disciples that he must suffer and die and how this confused and scared the disciples because they knew that they would have to suffer and make sacrifices as well. This is not what they were expecting from following the Messiah, which according to the Jewish understanding would be a political leader, who would give Israel and particularly his followers worldly greatness. Instead, God is asking them to become like little children and be servants of all, saving all glory for God and a heavenly reward.

Fr Isidore gives the homily at New Bedford, on Mar 29, 2026, contrasting the joyful Palm Sunday welcome of Jesus with the Passion’s betrayal and crucifixion, urging listeners to remain faithful like Mary at the cross amid personal and societal tendencies to abandon Christ during Holy Week.

In his Palm Sunday homily, Fr. Isidore reminds us how crowds cheered Jesus as King with palms and “Hosanna,” but soon shouted “Crucify Him.” He says this shows our own hearts: we love Jesus when life is easy, but turn away when suffering or sacrifice comes. Live Faith with Burning Hearts – Apr 19 – Homily – Fr Maximilian

Fr Maximilian gives the homily at New Bedford, on Apr 19, 2026, recounting the Road to Emmaus where disciples fail to recognize the risen Jesus in His glorified body until He breaks bread, as He explains Old Testament prophecies like Isaiah 53 foretelling His passion and redemption, urging believers to live with burning hearts in Eucharistic faith and gratitude.

In his homily, Fr. Maximilian describes the Gospel story of two disciples walking to Emmaus on Easter day, sad about Jesus’ death and not recognizing Him when He joins them. Jesus asks what they’re discussing, then explains how the Old Testament, like Isaiah 53, predicted His suffering, death, and redemption. Their hearts burn as He speaks, and they finally recognize Him when He breaks bread, just like at the Last Supper, before He vanishes. Fr. Maximilian says Jesus now has a glorified, immortal body full of light that can pass through doors, like ours will be at the end of time.
