A Prayer for Parents and Grandparents:

O Heavenly Father, I commend my children and grandchildren to Thy care. Be Thou their God and Father; and mercifully supply whatever is lacking in me through frailty or negligence. Strengthen them to overcome the corruptions of the world, whether from within or without; and deliver them from the secret snares of the enemy. Pour Thy grace into their hearts, and strengthen and multiply in them the gifts of Thy Holy Spirit, that they may daily grow in grace and in knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ; and so, faithfully serving Thee here, may come to rejoice in Thy presence hereafter. Amen.

Saints Joachim and Anne, you know how difficult it has become to raise holy children in our present culture: please pray for us and help us!

NOVENA PRAYER TO SAINTS ANNE & JOACHIM

Good parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grandparents of our Savior, Jesus Christ, when life seems barren, help us to trust in God’s mercy.

When we are confused, help us to find the way to God.

When we are lost in the desert, lead us to those whom God has called us to love.

When our marriage seems lifeless, show us the eternal youth of the Lord.

When we are selfish, teach us to cling only to that which lasts.

When we are afraid, help us to trust in God.

When we are ashamed, remind us that we are God’s children.

When we sin, lead us to do God’s will.

You who know God’s will for husband and wife, help us to live chastely.

You who know God’s will for the family, keep all families close to you.

You who suffered without children, intercede for all infertile couples.

You who trusted in God’s will, help us to respect God’s gift of fertility.

You who gave birth to the Blessed Mother, inspire couples to be co-creators with God.

You who taught the Mother of God, teach us to nurture children in holy instruction.

You whose hearts trusted in God, hear our prayers for . . . (state your request).

Pray with us for the ministry of Catholic family life. Pray with us for the ministry of Natural Family Planning. Pray with us for all who give their time, talent, and treasure to this good work.

Hail Mary . . .  Our Father . . . Glory be . . .

God of our fathers, you gave Saints Anne and Joachim the privilege of being the parents of Mary, the mother of your incarnate Son. May their prayers help us to attain the salvation you have promised to your people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fr John Lawrence gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jul 26, 2024, on how Saints Joachim and Anne’s patience and prayer were involved in bearing the Blessed Virgin Mary, exemplifying grace and wisdom foreshadowing her role as the new Ark of the Covenant.

Today’s readings fittingly celebrate Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary, who yielded rich fruit, notably the Son of God and all Christians (Luke 8:8 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/luke/8?8). Mary is the new Zion, gathering exiles according to God’s heart (Jeremiah 3:14-15 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/jeremiah/3?14), and she is the mediatrix of graces, aiding vocations.

As the Ark of the New Covenant (Revelation 11:19 –  https://bible.usccb.org/bible/revelation/11?19), Mary surpasses the old Ark in value, embodying wisdom more precious than all iches (Proverbs 8:11 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/proverbs/8?11). Joachim and Anne, blessed to raise her, needed extraordinary grace for this sacred task. Anne’s name means grace, and through her, the Immaculate Conception occurred, making her womb a second Eden.

Despite their sanctity, Joachim and Anne faced the sorrow of childlessness, a stigma seen as divine punishment (Genesis 16:2 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/genesis/16?2). Their perseverance and prayer led to the grace of having Mary (Luke 8:15 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/luke/8?15). Their patience prepared them for their sacred role, ultimately offering Mary to God’s service at the temple (CCC 529 – http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/529.htm).

St. Anne, known for her sanctity and influence, is a model for those in similar vocations and a patron for those seeking children. Her example and intercession remain powerful, helping form others in Mary’s virtues through the ages.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Holy Mother and Father of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as parents, you guided and nurtured Mary and, under your protection and love, watched her grow in holiness. Through your faithfulness and goodness the Will of God was fulfilled; the fruits of your virtue and faith brought salvation to the whole world with the birth of the baby Jesus. The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14)

Most Holy Saints Anne and Joachim, come close to us and guide our hand and our hearts in the way of virtue. Help us to parent our children and grandchildren with a gentle heart as you did. Show us how to raise our children in faith and bring our families into the Light of Jesus. Remain close to us and help us on our journey to salvation.

Saints Anne and Joachim, we place our petitions in your hands and ask that you lay them before the child Jesus. Seek this, my favor (mention your request here) but only if it be for the greater glory of God and the good of my soul.  Amen.
