Homily #080405 ( 07min) Play – The Gospel today talks about the storm tossed, imperiled barque of Peter on the Sea of Galilee and how Jesus comes out to the boat, walking on water, and saves them. So too the Barque of Peter, the Church, is today tossed by all the forces against her and Jesus, who is her head, makes her both Holy and Unsinkable.

Bonaventure preaches the account of Jesus walking on water out to the apostles on Peter’s boat and how the key verse is “they hardened their hearts.” By this is meant that they witnessed so many miracles but still had so much fear. They still did not trust Christ when the Barque of Peter, the Church, is buffeted by storms. Let us trust in Christ as the same Church is buffeted by modern storms.

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Apr 27, 2020, when he uses the new “Mass in Time of Pandemic” where the gospel has Jesus sleeping in the boat when a violent storm suddenly overtakes them, which is so comparable to our present times. He preaches that the coronavirus is not the final judgment but is meant to prepare us for it in the sense of a wakeup call to amend our lives, foster a similar process in our society and so be ready for our own death even if this is decades away.
