Fr. James Rooney, O.P. gives a homily for a retreat based on the Journey of the Mind to God by St. Bonaventure. He preaches on today’s Gospel on how we should relate to the wealth of the world. He relates this to the theme of the retreat and to the life of St. Martin of Tours who’s memorial was on that day. On our journey to God we must be thankful for what God has given but not to be too attached to them so that we are free to love God for Himself and grow closer to Him. He also refers to the book Abandonment To Divine Providence by Jean-Pierre De Caussade.

Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Nov 11, 2022, on the need for practicing the virtue of charity and growing in it as outlined by Tanqueray, that it does not mean that we have to have good feelings towards others but go beyond feelings, to wish and do good for others. To love others as Christ has loved us. He relates this to compassion, suffering with others, and how when charity grows is to make sacrifices for others and even for our enemies.

To St. Martin of Tours: You, who full of love and generosity when you saw the beggar that was freezing from cold, without knowing that in truth he was Christ, did not doubt to give him half of your cape, and did not give it completely to him since the other half belonged to the Roman army; you, who did not seek recognition but only to favor your neighbor, found glory before the Lord. And when the Savior appeared to you dressed with the half-cape so as to express appreciation for your gesture and He told you “today you covered Me with your mantle”, you decided to no longer serve the army and to dedicate your life to God and to the salvation of souls, being from then on a propagator of the faith and a holy man totally dedicated to whomever was in need.

Glorious Saint Martin, my blessed patron, I humbly ask you with great faith that you attain from God, the fount of all Mercies that my ways on this earth, my work and my toils be cleansed and opened with clarity. In the name of Omnipotent God, Saint Martin of Tours, remove all that harms me and give me work and prosperity. O blessed relief, give me your saintly protection, assist me, I beg you, in these difficult times:  (Mention your request here…)

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Nov 11, 2023, on the example of St Martin of Tours on how we should use our earthly wealth wisely by giving to the poor so that Our Lord will entrust us with eternal, spiritual wealth.

Father reflects on the Gospel of Saint Luke, specifically Chapter 16. He discusses the parable of the dishonest steward from Luke 16:1-13 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/luke/16, emphasizing worldly wisdom versus spiritual wisdom. Our Lord advises using material wealth for spiritual gains, a concept underlined in Luke 16:9 – make friends with dishonest [material] wealth to be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

St. Augustine reflects on the transient nature of material wealth, urging almsgiving as a means of investing in God’s kingdom. This is exemplified by St. Martin of Tours, who shared his cloak with a beggar and later saw Jesus wearing it in a dream, illustrating the blessings of charity.

He then explores the idea of true riches as mentioned in Luke 16:11 – if not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? This refers to spiritual wealth, such as virtues and God’s grace, which are more valuable than worldly possessions.

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Martin of Tours as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate the devotion to You he showed in preaching the truth to others.  St. Martin of Tours, you converted to the Christian Faith as a child. During your adulthood, your devotion to God led you to preach the Gospel to your parents and to convert your mother to the Faith. Please bring my petitions before God Whom you served with such devotion!

As the leaders of the Arian heresy were later gaining traction in the Church, you boldly preached against this heresy and did all you could to proclaim the truth. Pray for me, that I may never miss the opportunity to preach the Gospel to others. Pray that I may never allow difficulty or suffering to deter me from preaching the Good News.

Please also pray for (mention your intentions here).  St. Martin of Tours, pray for us!  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
