The tragic evil directed against America sixteen years ago today urges us still today, as in the case of present evils, to respond with a spirit of Christian faith. As we remember our loss and pray for the dead and those yet to be reconciled, let us practice Christian peace based on conversion and faithful obedience to the will of God.

He was able to see past the apparent contradiction in this. Father relates this to today’s Gospel reading of the dishonest steward and the contradiction that the children of light are sometimes not as wise as the children of the darkness.

And so, dearly beloved, let what St. Paul said come to pass, that “they that live, should from now on not live for themselves but for Him who died for all and rose again” (2 Cor 5:15).

And because the old things have passed away and all things have become new, let none remain in the old carnal life, but let us all be renewed by daily progress and growth in piety. For however much a person is justified, as long as one remains in this life, one can always be more improved and better. For the one that is not advancing is going back, and the one that is gaining nothing is losing something.

Let us run, then, with the steps of faith, by the works of mercy, in the love of righteousness, that keeping the day of our redemption spiritually, not in the old leaven of malice and wickedness, but in the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (cf 1 Cor 5:8), we may deserve to be partakers in Christ’s resurrection.

Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Nov 10, 2022, on the life of Pope St. Leo the Great, who had to protect the Church against spiritual and physical attacks, spiritual referring to heresy and physical referring to the barbarian invasions. This proves that Christ makes good on his promise that the gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church built on the rock of Peter. Yet they will attack.

Three things we can count on for the visible Church

1 – Never conquer the head and hierarchy, these will always remain until the second coming

2 – The visible Church will always have the faith

3 – Will have true worship, will always have licit and valid and pleasing to God

So stay in the Church even when people try to draw you off into different groups and movements.
