O most holy apostle, Saint Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, and of things almost despaired of.

Pray for me, who am so miserable. Make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help was almost despaired of.

Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect throughout eternity.

I promise you, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you.  Amen.

St. Jude (Feast Day is October 28th) is not only a Saint for “impossible causes” but also a Saint for hope in difficult situations:

Most holy Apostle, Saint Jude Thaddeus, friend of Jesus, I place myself in your care at this difficult time. Help me know that I need not face my troubles alone. Please join me in my need, asking God to send me: consolation in my sorrow, courage in my fear, and healing in the midst of my suffering. Ask our loving Lord to fill me with the grace to accept whatever may lie ahead for me and my loved ones, and to strengthen my faith in God’s healing powers. Thank you, Saint Jude Thaddeus, for the promise of hope you hold out to all who believe, and inspire me to give this gift of hope to others as it has been given to me.

V. Saint Jude, Apostle of Hope

Saints Simon the Zealot and Judas Thaddeus witnessed Jesus’ life and teachings, fulfilling the criteria for apostleship as laid out by Saint Peter in the replacement of Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:21-22 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/acts/1?21-22). They embraced their mission after Pentecost, tasked with spreading the Gospel, administering sacraments, and leading the Church.

Saint Simon, called the “Zealot,” likely held a fervent passion for the Jewish law, reminiscent of Elijah’s devotion (1 Kings 19:10 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1kings/19?10) and Saint Paul’s zeal before his conversion (Philippians 3:6 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/philippians/3?6). The term “Canaanean” from the Gospels of Matthew and Mark translates from Aramaic as “zealous,” aligning with Saint Luke’s usage in his Gospel. Saint Jude, known as Thaddeus, was a man of “big-hearted” character. At the Last Supper, he asked Christ why He would reveal Himself only to the apostles and not the world, to which Jesus responded about the divine love shared with those who keep His word (John 14:22-23 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/14?22-23).

Saint Jude authored an epistle warning against false teachings and urging believers to uphold the faith given to the saints (Jude 1:3 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/jude/1?3). Known as the patron of impossible causes, Saint Jude is associated with miracles of faith and devotion, as shown in the visions of Saint Bridget. Their relics are venerated in Saint Peter’s Basilica.
