One Minute Meditation

For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God,
+ St. Irenaeus

The glory of God gives life; those who see God receive life. Men will therefore see God if they are to live; through the vision of God they become immortal and attain to God himself. God is the source of all activity throughout creation. He cannot be seen or described in his own nature and in all his greatness by any of his creatures. Yet he is certainly not unknown.

Through his Word the whole creation learns that there is one God the Father, who holds all things together and gives them their being. As it is written in the Gospel, “No man has ever seen God, except the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father; he has revealed him.” From the beginning the Son is the one who teacher us about the Father; he is with the Father from the beginning. The Word revealed God to men and presented men to God. Life in man is the glory of God; the life of man is the vision of God. If the revelation of God through creation gives life to all who live upon the earth, much more does the manifestation of the Father through the Word give life to those who see God.

– from Against the Heresies by St. Irenaeus

O Almighty God, by whose grace and power thy holy bishop and martyr St. Irenaeus triumphed over suffering and was faithful even unto death: Grant us, who now remember him with thanksgiving, to be so faithful in our witness to thee in this world, that we may receive with him the crown of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Homily #130628b ( 11min) Play – Fr. Elias on the life of St. Irenaus (d. 202AD) whose name means peace and how we worked to build peace in the Church that was beset with the divisions of heresy and wrote a whole book called Against Heresy. He is the first recorded promoter of the Absolute Primacy of Christ, later championed by the Franciscan Bl. John Duns Scotus, that the whole of Creation was created for the purpose of bringing about the Incarnation. He also defended the doctrine on Adam and Eve and original sin. All of this he used to work for peace and can be used today to fight the prolific heresies of our own day that are causing so much strife.

Msgr. Arthur B. Calkins, gives the fifth talk titled “Causa Mariæ Advocatæ: The Marian Issue in the Church Today” at our Symposium “Mary Coredemptrix: Why the Dogma?” where he refers to the article by Fr. Peter Fehlner in the book “Mary, Unique Cooperator in the Redemption” and explains how Mary is united to Jesus in His work of redeeming the world. He mentions that Genesis 3 :15 is the central verse in the Bible where Mary would undo what Eve had done in the first sin in the Garden of Eden.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jun 28, 2023, where he continues his series on Franciscan Spirituality and how the idea that we are for Christ just as Christ is for God himself first relates to the logic of love and the Christocentric doctrinal basis of this spirituality.

Praise be to Jesus and Mary, now and forever. Today’s Franciscan spirituality discussion centers around the theme of our existence and the entire universe’s purpose being for Christ, underpinned by the principle of love. This love finds its ultimate realization in the Blessed Trinity and the Incarnation, extending to all creation, the masterpiece of God, who Himself is an embodiment of self-giving love.

We believe that all creation, including Our Lady, angels, men, women, and even inanimate and irrational beings, exist through Christ and for Christ. This principle, found in [‘Colossians 1:16 – For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible -‘](https://bible.usccb.org/bible/colossians/1?16) implies our ultimate return to God is always through Jesus Christ, who is the Alpha and Omega, as stated in [‘Revelation 1:8 – I am the Alpha and the Omega -‘](https://bible.usccb.org/bible/revelation/1?8).

Everything in the universe is “ad orientum,” oriented towards Christ. The entire creation hierarchy, from minerals to plants, animals, humans, and even angels, serves a purpose that leads ultimately to Him.

Christ is the recapitulation of all creation, a notion underlined in the theology of Saint Irenaeus. This concept of Christ being the center around which everything revolves is echoed in the writings of Saint Bonaventure. Christ is not only at the center of all beings and thoughts but also the greatest manifestation of God, or ‘theophany.’

Father Matthias Schaben emphasizes Christ’s role as the sun among planets – a heart of creation and life. He refers to Christ as the center of gravity of the universe, mirroring Jesus’ words in [‘John 12:32 – And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself -‘](https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/12?32). This recognition of Christ as the center of creation resonates strongly with Franciscan spirituality.

00:00 – Introduction
00:15 – How all creation is for Christ
01:01 – The Logic of Love and Its Expression Through Christ
01:56 – Christ as the Alpha and Omega
02:55 – Christ is the recapitulation of all creation
03:46 – Central to Mystical, Supernatural and Metaphysical orders
04:29 – Christ as the Sun of Creation: His Role in Attracting All Beings
05:30 – Drawing All Men to Himself

This is a continuation of his series of homilies on Franciscan Spirituality – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNN151zTIO4&list=PLejh_e0-LN4xgMllKrzSasL2Hljd5BHom

The material for this series comes primarily from Ciccarelli, Marciano M., “I capisaldi della spiritualità francescana” in Italian, which translates as “The Cornerstones of Franciscan Spirituality”. No English translations exist at the time of this recording.
