One Minute Meditation

St Ignatius of Loyola, Founder of the Jesuits

(1491-1556) Feast Day is July 31st

Some Prayers Attributed to Him:

A favorite prayer for after Holy Communion, the Anima Christi:

(“The Soul of Christ” composed by St. Ignatius of Loyola)

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O good Jesus, hear me.

Within Thy wounds hide me.

Suffer me not to be separated from Thee.

From the malignant enemy, defend me.

In the hour of my death, call me.

And bid me come to Thee.

That with Thy saints I may praise Thee.

For all eternity. Amen.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anima Christi, sanctifica me.Corpus Christi, salve me.Sanguis Christi, inebria me.Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.Passio Christi, conforta me.O bone Iesu, exaudi me.Intra tua vulnera absconde me.Ne permittas me separari a te.Ab hoste maligno defende me.In hora mortis meae voca me.Et iube me venire ad te,ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Surrender (Suscipe)

Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty,

my memory, my understanding and my whole will.

All that I am and all that I possess You have given me:

I surrender it all to You to be disposed of according to Your will.

Give me only Your love and Your grace;

with these I will be rich enough, and will desire nothing more.

Generosity

Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your will.

In the homily for the memorial of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Jul 31), Fr Matthias speaks on the saint’s three categories of people. According to the holy founder of the Society of Jesus (aka, Jesuits), there are some who love their attachments to the exclusion of God; some who try to love both their attachments and God; and some who reserve all their love for God alone.

In which category do you fall?

Ave Maria!

Mass: St. Ignatius of Loyola – Mem

In the homily for the memorial of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Jul 31, 2019), Fr. Matthias summarizes and explains the principal points in St. Ignatius’ doctrine on the discernment of spirits. While applying God’s law to life can sometimes be complex and challenging, we can rest assured that it is always possible and never harmful to us or to others. Father uses logic in conjunction with Ignatius’ principles to expose current errors in moral theology.

In the homily for Monday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time (Oct 21, 2019), Fr. Josemaria points out that in the Parable of the Rich Fool (Lk 12: 16-21), the rich man was shrewd, but not wise. He forgot his ultimate end: God. “The fool says in his heart: ‘There is no God’” (Ps 14:1).

Today, the world still carries on as if God doesn’t exist, and thus perpetuates a fundamental disorder in the affairs of men. The truly wise policy which balances natural and supernatural considerations was summed up by St. Ignatius of Loyola: “Work as if everything depended on you, and pray as if everything depended on God.”

Fr John Lawrence gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jul 31, 2024, on how St. Ignatius of Loyola was transformed from a courtier to a saint, founding the Jesuits and emphasizing humility as the foundation of virtue against the devil’s temptations.

St. Ignatius of Loyola, born in 1491, underwent a remarkable transformation from a courtier to a saint. After suffering severe injuries during the Siege of Pamplona in 1521, he experienced a profound conversion while reading “The Life of Christ” and “A Book of the Lives of Saints.” Inspired by the lives of saints like St. Francis and St. Dominic, Ignatius dedicated himself to God, leaving his former life behind. He founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540, emphasizing spiritual warfare against the devil’s tactics, particularly the temptation towards pride. Ignatius’s “Spiritual Exercises” teach us to counter pride with humility, embracing poverty of spirit and resisting the temptations of honor and riches. He encourages us to seek humility as the foundation of all virtues, following the example of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
