Born in the family castle of Xavier, near Pamplona in the Basque area of Spanish Navarre on Apr. 7, he was sent to the University of Paris in 1525. There he met St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he received Holy Orders in Venice in 1537. In 1540 he was sent to evangelize India. He labored in western India, the island of Ceylon, Malacca, Molucca Islands, island of Mindanao (Philippines), and Japan. On the memorial of St. Agnes of Assisi  (Nov 19, 2019, readings from Tuesday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time), Fr. Andre comments on the heroic witness of Eleazar, who refused to even appear to comply with the ungodly law of the oppressors of Israel. His example shows the importance of the faithful social witness of prominent members of the society, when that society of the faithful is in jeopardy of turning away from God’s truth and God’s law.

Father offers a number of examples from Scripture, with practical suggestions for the spiritual and sacramental life of the faithful, uplifting souls with the praying of the Spiritual Communion. Such fervent striving for fidelity will help us today to emulate the noble example of a hero like Eleazar, champion of the Faith in the Old Testament.
