Ave Maria Meditations

Every cross, great or small, every discomfort even, is an appeal from our Beloved, asking us to declare our love and go on doing so while the cross lasts. When we think of it like this, could we not wish that our cross could last forever? It will last as long as Jesus wishes. However sweet it may be, however greatly loved, we desire it only as long as it is Jesus wills for us. Your will, not ours, Brother Jesus! As for ourselves we should think no more of ourselves… we should think only of You, our Beloved Spouse.

We want not what seems good to us, but what is good to You. We have nothing for ourselves; all we ask is Your glory. Hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in Your children, in all men. May these things be done in us. May we give all possible glory to You throughout our lives. May we do Your will, may we give all possible solace to Your Heart. That is all we want and all we need. We are here at Your feet, do with us as You will, whatever it may be, do it according to Your will. We have no will, no wish except to fulfill Your will, to do what seems good to You.

Lord Jesus, You are in the holy Eucharist. You are here, a yard away in the tabernacle. Your body, Your soul, Your human nature, Your divinity, Your whole being is there. How close you are, my God, my Savior, my Jesus, my Brother, my, my Spouse, my Beloved!

You were not nearer to the Blessed Virgin during the nine months she carried You in her womb then You are to me when You rest on my tongue at Holy Communion. You were no closer to the Blessed Virgin and Saint Joseph in the caves at Bethlehem or in the house at Nazareth or during the flight into Egypt, or at any moment of that divine family life than You are to me at this moment in the tabernacle. Saint Mary Magdalene was no closer to You when she sat at Your feet at Bethany than I am here at the foot of this altar. You were no nearer to Your apostles when You were sitting in the midst of them than You are to me now, my God. How blessed I am!

St. Charles’ Prayer of Abandonment:

I abandon myself into Your hands; do with me what You will. Whatever You may do, I thank You:  I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only Your will be done in me, and in all Your creatures. I wish no more than this, O Lord. Into your hands I commend my soul; I offer it to You with all the love of my heart, for I love You, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into Your hands, without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for You are my Father

And from the personal journal of Saint Charles from early on in his reconversion:

Oh God, what is most displeasing to You in my soul? I lack the spirit of prayer, of confidence in You, love, meekness, loyalty and generosity. Jesus is not pleased with me. Dryness and darkness, everything is painful to me; Holy Communion, liturgical and mental prayer, everything, everything even telling Jesus I love him. I must rivet myself to the life of faith. If I could only feel that Jesus loved me. But He never tells me so. What I principally lack is forgetfulness of self and fraternal sympathy with others.

And Jesus responses: you ask me how you have most offended Me. In not loving Me purely, wholeheartedly enough, by loving yourself and by loving created beings for your own sake and theirs. Do nothing for your own sake, nothing for creatures out of self-love, or love of them. And everything you have to do, have eyes only for Me. In everything, ask yourself only what the Master would have done, and do that. Then you’ll love only Me, then I shall live in you, you will lose yourself in the and live in Me. There will be nothing of you left: My kingdom will have come in you.

Ave Maria Meditations

O God, how good You are to allow us to call You “Our Father”. Who am I that my Creator, my King, my Master, should allow me to call Him Father?  And not only allows me to do so, but commands it!

O God, how good You are! How frequently I should remind myself throughout my whole life of this most precious commandment. What gratitude, what joy, what love, and above all what confidence You inspire in me. And as You are my Father and my God, how perfectly I should always hope in You. And again, as You were so good to me, how good I must to be to others.

O Father, teach me to have Your Name continually on my lips with Jesus, and in Him and through Him; it is my greatest good fortune to be able to say it. Our Father, Our Father, may I live and die saying, “Our Father” and by my gratitude, love and obedience be truly Your loyal son, a son pleasing to Your heart. Amen.

Ave Maria Meditations

O Jesus, since You are always with us in the Holy Eucharist, grant that we may always be with You, always keep You company at the foot of the tabernacle, and not lose through our fault a single moment that we can spend before You, our Beloved, our all. You are there, You invite us to keep You company; then should we not run to You? Or should we spend elsewhere a single one of the moments You permit us to spend at Your feet?

O my beloved Jesus, You are whole and entire, completely alive in the Holy Eucharist, as fully as You were in the house of the holy family of Nazareth, or in the house of Magdalene at Bethany, as You were in the midst of Your apostles… You are here in the same way, O my Beloved, my All! Oh, let us never be distracted from Your presence in the Holy Eucharist for a single moment of the time You let us be with You.
