A little history of the apparition of Our Lady at Lourdes

I cannot promise you happiness in this life; only in the next”, said Our Lady to the little girl named Bernadette. The young girl lives out her life quietly, going to a convent and never seeking attention for herself. She gave all of herself to God and became a great saint. Her body is incorrupt and it looks so beautiful as if she is only sleeping. It is a marvel!

History of Our Lady of Lourdes

The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in southern France is the most visited pilgrimage site in the world — principally because of the apparent healing properties of the waters of the spring that appeared during the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to a poor, fourteen-year-old girl, Bernadette Soubirous.

The first apparition occurred February 11, 1858.

There were eighteen in all; the last took place July 16, of the same year. Bernadette often fell into an ecstasy during these apparitions, as was witnessed by the hundreds who attended the later visions, though no one except Bernadette ever saw or heard the apparition. The mysterious vision Bernadette saw in the hollow of the rock Massabielle, where she and friends had gone to gather firewood, was that of a young and beautiful lady. “Lovelier than I have ever seen” said the child. She described the Lady as clothed in white, with a blue ribbon sash and a Rosary handing from her right arm. Now and then the apparition spoke to Bernadette.

One day, the Lady told the girl to drink of a mysterious fountain within the grotto itself, the existence of which was unknown, and of which there was no sign. But Bernadette scratched at the ground, and a spring immediately bubbled up and soon gushed forth.

On another occasion the apparition bade Bernadette go and tell the priests she wished a chapel to be built on the spot and processions to be made to the grotto. At first the clergy were incredulous. The priest said he would not believe it unless the apparition gave Bernadette her name.

After another apparition, Bernadette reported that the Lady told her, “I am the Immaculate Conception”. Though the girl was unfamiliar with the term, the Pope had declared the doctrine of the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary in 1854. Four years after Bernadette’s visions, in 1862, the bishop of the diocese declared the faithful “justified in believing the reality of the apparition” of Our Lady.

A basilica was built upon the rock of Massabielle by M. Peyramale, the parish priest. In 1873 the great “national” French pilgrimages were inaugurated. Three years later the basilica was consecrated and the statue solemnly crowned. In 1883 the foundation stone of another church was laid, as the first was no longer large enough. It was built at the foot of the basilica and was consecrated in 1901 and called the Church of the Rosary. Pope Leo XIII authorized a special office and a Mass, in commemoration of the apparition, and in 1907 Pius X extended the observance of this feast to the entire Church; it is now observed on February 11.

If you have never seen the movie “The Song of Bernadette” from the 1940s, I recommend you do so. It can be rented.  It was made by a Jewish man who made a promise to Our Lady at Lourdes that if he would survive and escape the horrors of WWII Europe, he would tell the story of St. Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes. He did survive and he kept his promise and the Oscar winning movie was made.   This is a video that you never forget.

Immaculate Mary, thy praises we sing; Who reignest in splendor with Jesus our King:

Ave, ave, ava Maria. Ave, ave Maria.

In heaven the blessed thy glory proclaim; On earth, we, thy children, invoke your sweet name.

Ave, ave, ave Maria. Ave, ave Maria.

We pray for our mother, the Church upon earth; And bless, Holy Mary, the land of our birth. Ave, ave, ave Maria. Ave, ave Maria.

Angelo makes the connection between the Annunciation where an angel appeared to Mary and the Apparition at Lourdes when Our Lady appears to St. Bernadette. Ave Maria!

This is a new high quality feature length movie of the life of St. Bernadette that has an interesting twist. All the actors are kids! It is professionally produced by Navis Films which is starting a whole new genre of films called “Children’s Cinema”.

Here is an excerpt from their website:

Just a very quick word about our purpose:

Western Civilization is declining, our culture is crumbling, and it will be up to our children and our children’s children to help save it. The arts comprise a hugely influential component of that culture. If we can inspire one child to take up a career in those arts, and to create stunning beauty so as to lift men’s souls toward God, and in doing so glorify Him, we will have succeeded. To that end we are creating an entirely new genre of film: Children’s Cinema. St. Bernadette of Lourdes features a cast of over 100 mostly home-schooled, Catholic children ranging from 3 to 17 years of age. We are certain that the benefits of this unique experience will extend far beyond its cast and their families. It has been my experience with our other films, and with the extremely successful Glory Stories audio series which I created with Ken Davison of Holy Heroes, that kids love hearing and watching other kids perform. I’m sure you and your kids will absolutely love this film, and the other projects we will be bringing to market within the next few months.

God bless you, and thank you for visiting Navis Pictures.

In Christ,
– Jim Morlino
President, Navis Pictures

Interestingly, some of these kids regularly come with their parents to our friary here in Griswold, CT. Enjoy…

Ave Maria Meditations

I want my whole life to be inspired by love. He who loves, does all things easily, or, if he suffers, he loves that suffering. Why is suffering necessary? Because on earth, pure love cannot exist without suffering. 0 Jesus, Jesus, I no longer feel my cross when I think of yours.O my soul, be the faithful imitator of Jesus meek and humble of heart. He who has been meek and humble of heart deserves to be glorified. What then will be the reward of those who, interiorly humble and exteriorly humiliated, have followed the humility of our Savior in all its dimensions?

+

O Mary, my dear Mother, here is your poor child, unable to carry on any longer. You know my needs and above all my spiritual distress. Have pity on me. Grant that one day I may be with you in heaven. I shall do everything to gain heaven, for there is my home. There I shall find my Mother in all her celestial glory and, with her, I shall enjoy the happiness of Jesus himself.

O Mary, most loving Mother, grant that following your example, I may be generous in all the sacrifices that our Lord may ask of me during my life. O Mother, offer me to Jesus! O Mother, take my heart and conceal it in the heart of my Jesus.

Ave Maria Meditations

From the Private Notes of St. Bernadette Soubirous:

O Jesus and Mary, let my entire consolation in this world be to love you and to suffer for sinners. I shall spend every moment loving. One who loves does not notice her trials; or perhaps more accurately, she is able to love them.

I must die to myself continually and accept trials without complaining. I work, I suffer and I love with no other witness than his heart. Anyone who is not prepared to suffer all for the Beloved and to do his will in all things is not worthy of the sweet name of Friend, for here below, Love without suffering does not exist.

O my Mother, to you I sacrifice all other attachments so that my heart may belong entirely to you and to my Jesus.I shall do everything for Heaven, my true home. There I shall find my Mother in all the splendor of her glory. I shall delight with her in the joy of Jesus himself in perfect safety.

From this moment on, anything concerning me is no longer of any interest to me. I must belong entirely to God and God alone; never to myself.

Love overcomes, love delights. Those who love the Sacred Heart rejoice. Jesus, my God, I love you above all things. O Jesus, I would rather die a thousand deaths than be unfaithful to you!
