St. Athanasius stood “against the world” to defend the divinity of Christ against the Arian heresy. The saving faith rests on that most fundamental doctrine on Christ–that Jesus Christ is divinity incarnate in human flesh, true God and true Man. As St. John said in the first reading: “The victory that conquers the world is our faith. Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 Jn 5:4-5).

As C. S. Lewis commented about St. Athanasius: “He stood for the Trinitarian doctrine, ‘whole and undefiled,’ when it looked as if all the civilized world was slipping back from Christianity into the religion of Arius – into one of those ‘sensible’ synthetic religions which are so strongly recommended today and which, then as now, included among their devotees many highly cultivated clergymen. It is his glory that he did not move with the times…”

In the homily for the Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major (Aug 5, 2019), Fr. Alan relates the dogma of the Divine Maternity to Catholic belief in Christ, Son of God, and to faith in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, through which man may partake in the immortality of the Resurrection to come.

On the memorial of St. Hilary (Bishop and Doctor of the Church, Jan 13, 2020), Fr. Alan gives the homily on how the Fourth Century heresy of Arianism, the false doctrine denying the divinity of Jesus Christ, is again apparent in deviations from the true faith today. Relating the present situation to Our Lord’s proclamation and call to conversion heard in today’s Gospel, Father reminds us of the urgency of his message at all times. Despite the present-day lack of faith, it is as true now as it was when Jesus said it: “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”
