The Sedevacantist professes that the Seat of Peter is now vacant. Benedict XVI  is a false pope posing as the legitimate Vicar of Christ. Their reasoning is that he, and at least 4 of  his predecessors, have taught and believe heresy, and so automatically are deposed of their office. Their error is private judgment, which when looked at reveals a foundation built upon sand.

Yesterday Bishop Bernard Fellay of the Society of St. Pius X met with Cardinal William Levada at the offices of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and was presented with a “doctrinal preamble” for the Society’s consideration and, hopefully, eventual assent.  After the meeting the CDF released a communiqué regarding the meeting.  Here is the most pertinent paragraph:

Given the concerns and requests presented by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X regarding the integrity of the Catholic faith considering the hermeneutic of rupture of the Second Vatican Council in respect of Tradition – hermeneutic mentioned by Pope Benedict XVI in his Address to the Roman Curia of December 22, 2005 -, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith takes as a fundamental basis for a full reconciliation with the Apostolic See the acceptance of the Doctrinal Preamble which was delivered in the course of the meeting of September 14, 2011. This preamble enunciates some of the doctrinal principles and criteria of interpretation of Catholic doctrine necessary for ensuring fidelity to the Magisterium of the Church and to the sentire cum Ecclesia, while leaving open to legitimate discussion the study and theological explanation of particular expressions and formulations present in the texts of the Second Vatican Council and of the Magisterium that followed it.

Notice the reference to Pope Benedict’s Address to the Roman Curia of December 25, 2005 (specifically its rejection of the “hermeneutic of rupture”), as well as the last sentence.  That is the money quote.  It annunciates several things:

1. The doctrinal principles and criteria of interpretation of Catholic doctrine,
2. That these are necessary for ensuring fidelity to the Magistierium and the sentire cum Ecclesia (to think with the Church),
3. Openness to legitimate discussion of the study and theological explanation of particular expressions and formulations present in the texts of Vatican II and the post-conciliar Magisterium.

Here is one interesting comment from Fr. Z’s blogposton the subject:

 I think, if this all works out, the SSPX will be an influence on the rest of the Church. There are many in the Institute of Christ the King and Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (et al!) who personally reject all of the documents of the Second Vatican Council, but have been afraid to say so. This would open up a huge door, essentially allowing a “pro-choice” position on Vatican II without fear of suspension.

One can only wonder if the comment reflects the reality of the situation within traditionalist organizations that officially profess to accept Vatican II.  In any case, “pro-choice” is an interesting choice of words.  This tendency to hope for some loophole for Conciliar rejection goes way beyond what has been so far revealed about the “doctrinal preamble.”  No surprise there.

To deny that they are in schism is to fall into the same word games as the modernists.

Lifting the excommunications did not take away the schism any more than lifting the excommunication of the Easter Orthodox bishops does not heal that one.

Impatience displayed by their disobedience is a refusal to suffer in the footsteps of Christ.

Saints are always obedient. Schism is false reform. True reform is to stay in the Church and become saints.

Lefebvre and his followers compared himself to Athanasius, who fought almost single-handedly against the majority of bishops.

But Paul VI points out Athanasius was backed by the preceding ecumenical council, the Council of Nicea, whereas Lefebvre railed against the preceding ecumenical council, Vatican II.

Faculties were taken away from Lefebvre, but he ignored this, performing illicit masses and priestly ordinations in front of thousands with large crowds of journalists.

But disobedience is not edification of the Church.

Msgr. John Magee, secretary of Pope Paul VI, says the pope did great penance as a just reparation for the grave offenses to God that Lefebvre committed.

The question is actually three separate but related questions:

1 – Can I attend?

2 – Does it fulfill the Sunday obligation?

3 – Can I receive communion?

Can I attend an SSPX? No, because they do not have faculties. So their mass is illicit and therefore sacrilegious to receive.

Can I receive communion? No, you can not.

Does it fulfill Can. 1248 must receive at a Catholic parish. – https://www.vatican.va/archive/cod-iuris-canonici/eng/documents/cic_lib4-cann1244-1253_en.html

Father covers the correspondence and statements of Msgr. Camille Perl, Secretary of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, which were firmly and consistently against attending the SSPX masses, contrary to SSPX assertions.

An objection is that Can. 844 overrules Can 1248, which says we can attend non-catholic services, but this is only under extreme situations where there are no Catholic Churches available, and even then it does not mean that you will fulfill your Sunday obligation, only the divine precept to worship – https://www.vatican.va/archive/cod-iuris-canonici/eng/documents/cic_lib4-cann834-878_en.html#BOOK_IV

Lack of access to a 1962 Latin Mass does not constitute an extreme situation.

There is a distinction between Divine law and Church law. – Divine law is to worship God in some way on Sunday, Church law says you must go to a Catholic parish mass each Sunday.

Can he ever attend a mass? Not necessarily sinful but unwise at the very least, given the schismatic mentality that prevails.

Sin to knowingly put yourself in an occasion of sin.

Church has bent over to bring them back in an ecumenical spirit

Does any diocese allow attending or receiving communion? Not that I know, but ask your bishop

Pope Francis is accused

Ask yourself, Why would I attend

Am I more attached to the old mass than to the will of God?

SSPX was suppressed in 1975, and faculties were removed, and yet they still celebrated mass illicitly, rejecting Vatican II, calling the mass of Paul VI evil.

SSPX rightly points out the confusion of such sugar-coating by liberals but fails to apply it to themselves.

Starve the schism, don’t go, don’t listen to their apologists, avoid traditionalist websites
