The King of Love is Crowned with Thorns

Jesus, Man of Sorrows, those drops of Blood that flow down Your Face, those deep gashes caused by the thorns that circle Your holy head, make You dearer to me than if Your forehead shone with precious stones. Such signs remind me of the Divine love that burns in Your Heart for me. I love the noble, sorrowful majesty of Your holy Face. You reject the crown of gold and the rich robes of royal state, and accept instead a crown of thorns and the purple rags of mockery and scorn.

You consent to be a mock-king, a king of fools, only to be the real King of my soul. My thorn-crowned King, I adore You as my very God. I subject myself entirely to Your Divine Kingship of love. I would rather be a fool in the eyes of men for Your sake and have You reign over me, than be king of the world and be the slave of the prince of darkness. I adore You as the Conqueror of hearts, whose Kingdom is not of this world, but of heaven.

Bonaventure preaches on the role that Mary’s sufferings have in the Redemption. He starts with the prophecy of Simeon where she is told that her heart will be pierced by a sword that the thoughts of nations will be revealed and then proceeds through all seven of her sorrows:

at the prophecy of Simeon
at the flight into Egypt
having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem
meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary
standing at the foot of the Cross
Jesus being taken from the Cross
at the burial of Christ.

On the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Aug 06), Fr. Alan gives the homily on how the Transfiguration served as a “flash forward” to the future glory of the Risen Christ, and to the same glory that awaits us if we follow Christ, denying our self and carrying our Cross in this life.

Considering the Transfiguration in the context of the whole Gospel gives an insight into our own Christian experience as one of persevering through trials, sustained by the hope and faith in the Resurrection.
