Homily #080615 ( 00min) Play – Fr. Bonaventure highlights how deep the mercy of Christ is for His sheep in the account presented in the Gospel today. He points out that this mercy and compassion which leads Our Lord to die for His sheep is the key mark that distinguishes a good pastor from bad and motivates the good ones to feed their sheep with the true, unchanging doctrine entrusted to the apostles and their successors. From this basis he launches into a critique of modern culture and politics that fall far short of the mark.

Homily #090621 ( 14min) Play – Using the analogy used by St. Augustine  of the two cities, the City of God and the City of the Devil, Fr. Ignatius explains the reading of today’s Epistle from I Peter 5:6-11 where the Devil prowl’s around like a roaring lion seeking the ruin of souls, trying to lure souls from the City of God using worldly pleasures and vanity and that we need virtues like faith and humility to fight against him. But further if we find ourselves lost in the wilderness of vice then the we can ask the Good Shepherd for help to get back to the fold, the Church, as in today’s Gospel.

They then haul in a great number or of very large fish but even then the nets do not break. This unbreakable net is a symbol of the unbreakable Church that will catch all nations. He emphasizes that this will be tightly bound to the ministry of Peter and his successors in the office of Vicar of Christ who will “Feed my sheep” at the proper time.

Homily #100425 ( 22min) Play –  Today is Good Shepherd Sunday, the forth Sunday in Easter where the readings refer to Jesus as the Good Shepherd, specifically how he leads His sheep to eternal life. It is also the Church-wide prayer day for vocations to the priesthood. Fr. Angelo preaches on the need for good shepherds, especially in the face of Church scandals and in the face of a society that is in a state of moral decay which is leading so many to eternal death.

Jesus said:
“My sheep hear my voice;
I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.
No one can take them out of my hand.
My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,
and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand.
The Father and I are one.”

Homily #100912 ( 23min) Play – In today’s Gospel we have the parables of mercy, the lost coin, the lost sheep, and to top it off, the parable of the prodigal son. Fr Dominic, during his first homily as the guardian of the friary here in Griswold, emphasizes the greatness of this mercy that is almost too good to be true if it weren’t spoken by Truth Himself. We need mercy and, fortunately, God wants to give it if we humble ourselves with true contrition for our sins and a firm resolve to reform our lives and persevere in this. This firmness of our resolve is the necessary and only worthy response to this great mercy that our great God is offering.  He also exhorts us to show mercy to others and pray for each other and to make use of the sacrament of mercy, that is, Confession, and the intercession of the saints. All of which is consistent with a firm resolve to amend our lives.

We should realize then the personal concern that Jesus has for each one of us and we should also have this concern then for our neighbors. Father further points out the great evil of sin which leads souls astray and how preaching and praying for others is so important to the salvation of souls, to lead them to the sacraments.
