Andrew Comiskey, Executive Director and Founder of Desert Stream Ministries, gives his talk at the 2012 Courage Conference at Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. The talk is titled “Naked Surrender – Coming Home to our True Sexuality” based on his book of that title. He covers his long journey from a homosexual lifestyle to becoming a Christian and the long healing process involved in shedding the brokenness of a sin and coming to the wholeness of Christ and helping others to do the same in his ministry. He stresses that the process of healing is never finished here on earth and key to remaining fruitful both for healing oneself and others is to continually acknowledge one’s own brokenness before God and men in all humility. He intersperses references to his recent conversion to the Catholic faith and how this has integrated with his overall journey. Listen to this heartfelt talk, filled with pastoral wisdom and understanding for those suffering from same sex attraction.

Fr. Joseph Klee of the diocese of Columbus gives his talk at the 2012 Courage Conference at Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. The talk is titled “A Simple Plan: Blessed Mother Teresa’s Perspective of Life” where he outlines her simple but radical remedy to the materialism of the modern world based on poverty, chastity and obedience. He points out how her solution which seems to be so restrictive, in fact, leads to true freedom in that it gives the strength to simplify life, reject vice, embrace virtue and how this is so effective for resisting same sex attraction.

He reflects on “The Secret of Life”, that the meaning of life is to prepare for everlasting life with our Lord, to love and be loved by him for all eternity. Father makes an analogy between development of our natural life to the development of our supernatural, spiritual life. Just as we educate our minds and exercise our bodies, we should also work on developing the grace God gave us at Baptism and how the exercise of selfless charity toward our neighbor builds our charity to the Lord and then he helps us to love even more.

At the 2015 Courage Conference at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Il.  Fr. John Waiss, Pastor of St. Mary of the Angels in Chicago titles his talk, “The Role of Relationships in Understanding Identity” using the insights of John Paul II’s personalism. He connects the relationship with God to that of people around us and that this should be how we identify ourselves. Where as today we have performance based identity, how much we make, how attractive we are and this is the cause of our moral decadence. By focusing on our relationships, God first and then our neighbors, we will be able to grow a healthy self-identity and avoid the escapism of various addictions including sex.  In this regard he discusses the different but complimentary roles of spiritual direction and psychological therapy and the importance of family.

Emily Stimpson a freelance author based in Steubenville, OH gives the “Nine Rules of Catholic Friendship” in her talk at the 2015 Courage Conference at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Il.  These rules refer to how to have good friendships in the single life as a fulfilled, chaste, happy person in a world that does not understand true friendship. She bases them on John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. They are:
1. Be real. Be yourself so that you love others others love the real you.
2. Have fun in friendships. Be open to new experiences.
3. Grow in Holiness grow closer to Christ, be challenged by your friends and challenge them.
4. Be consistent in your friendships, seeing the value of other people and love them.
5. Avoiding clicks, reach out to others.
6. Be called out of yourselves and learn to be a gift to others.
7. Keep friendships divers in race, age, status.
8. Be seasonal, all-weather, in all circumstance. Be a gift to others even when this is not easy.
9. Be personal, one-on-one as opposed to online, develop hospitality and community.
