Prayer for the Spirit of Work
Glorious St. Joseph,
model of all who pass their life in labor,
obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance
to atone for my many sins;
to work conscientiously,
putting the call of duty above my own inclinations;
to work with gratitude and joy,
considering it an honor to use and develop by my labor
the gifts I have received from God;
to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience,
without ever recoiling before weariness or difficulties.
Help me to work, above all, with purity of intention
and with detachment from self,
having always before my eyes the hour of death
and the accounting which I must render
of time lost, talents wasted, good omitted,
and vain complacency in success,
which is so fatal to the work of God.
All for Jesus,
all for Mary,
all after your example,
O Patriarch Joseph!
This shall be my watchword in life and in death.

Saint Joseph had no reason to doubt Mary’s purity, but neither could he doubt her pregnancy. But when the angel came, he was able to understand the meaning of this sign: that Her Son was God. The Father of the Church tell us that if a virgin bore, it would be God; and if God were to become man, His mother would be a virgin. This sign shows God’s plan, His descent into our humanity, and His ultimate victory. We are called to participate both in the Joy of Bethlehem and the suffering of Calvary, in imitation of Mary’s total commitment to God’s will. Let us wait with Saint Joseph under this great sign of the Virgin Mother. Let us keep our eyes on this great sign, “deep as the netherworld” and “high as the sky”. It is still dark, but the Morning Star is with us, and day is coming soon.

Father reflects on Saint Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary starting their journey to Bethlehem as Advent nears its conclusion. Joseph, though not the biological father, ensured Jesus’ legal connection to the House of David. Despite difficulties, Joseph faithfully carried out God’s plan to protect Mary and Jesus.

Saint Joseph’s spiritual life inspires us to make room in our hearts for Jesus this Christmas, especially when recalling Luke 2:7 – “there was no room for them in the inn.” Father urges us to prepare spiritually and emulate Joseph’s trust, dedication, and prayerful life. Like Saint Teresa of Avila, we can learn from Joseph’s example to grow closer to God.
