Homily #080530s ( 06min) Play – Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, Evening Mass. All things are centered toward Christ and the center of Christ is his Sacred Heart. And, since God is love, the Sacred Heart is the symbol of Love itself. St. Margret Mary Alacoque saw this love in the form of flames surging from the Lord’s wounded Heart that demand a loving response from us.

He bases his homily on a reading different from those from the Mass where our Lord describes his Heart as meek and humble. Taking up this yoke of meekness and humility is easy and sweet and is much easier to bear than the yoke of pride and anger that so many choose.

As Our Lord says in Mat 15:28-29:

28 Come to me all you that labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you. 29 Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: And you shall find rest to your souls. 30 For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

On the memorial of St. Gregory the Great (Pope & Doctor of the Church, Sept. 3), Fr. Alan explains how the current crisis of sexual abuse within the Church conspicuously points to the need for reform, beginning by restoring the principle of truth in matters of faith and morals, especially with regard to sexual behavior.

St. Gregory reformed the Church in his day, addressing lost discipline in the clergy and in the liturgy by restoring the sense of sin and of the sense of the sacred. These fundamental issues are today undermined by the loss of the principle of truth, through relativism. A sense of truth must be restored in order to resolve the crisis at the root.
