Ave Maria!

We hope you enjoy this concert that our friars – primarily those who are studying for the priesthood – recently performed in the town of Comacchio, Italy, at the shrine of Our Lady of the Royal Hall, or “Santa Maria in Aula Regia” in Italian.  Included in the choir are Fra Pio Maximilian, Fra Alan Bernardino (recently ordained to the diaconate), Fra Josemaria Mary, and our own Fra Terrance behind the camera (well, seated in the pews, to be exact).

Homily #131122 ( 05min) Play – Sacred music is set apart for divine worship, whose purpose is to give glory to God and sanctify the people. Gregorian chant is the supreme model and “holds pride of place because it is proper to the Roman Liturgy” (GIRM 41). St. Cecilia is the patron of music and we invoke her intercession for the renewal of sacred music in the liturgy.

Ave Maria,
In the Roman Breviary this hymn is used at Sunday Vespers during Lent from the first Sunday in Lent until the Friday before Passion Sunday.

AUDI, benigne Conditor,
nostras preces cum fletibus,
sacrata in abstinentia 1
fusas quadragenaria.
O MERCIFUL Creator, hear!
To us in pity bow Thine ear:
accept the tearful prayer we raise
in this our fast of forty days.
Scrutator alme cordium,
infirma tu scis virium;
ad te reversis exhibe
remissionis gratiam.
Our hearts are open, Lord, to Thee:
Thou knowest our infirmity;
pour out on all who seek Thy face
abundance of Thy pardoning grace.
Multum quidem peccavimus,
sed parce confitentibus,
tuique laude nominis 2
confer medelam languidis.
Our sins are many, this we know;
spare us, good Lord, Thy mercy show;
and for the honor of Thy name
our fainting souls to life reclaim.
Sic corpus extra conteri
dona per abstinentiam,
ieiunet ut mens sobria
a labe prorsus criminum. 3
Give us self-control that springs
from discipline of outward things,
that fasting inward secretly
the soul may purely dwell with Thee.
Praesta, beata Trinitas,
concede, simplex Unitas,
ut fructuosa sint tuis
haec parcitatis munera. Amen.
We pray Thee, Holy Trinity,
one God, unchanging Unity,
that we from this our abstinence
may reap the fruits of penitence. Amen.

Ave Maria!
This hymn is based on a long medieval Latin poem, Salve mundi salutare, with stanzas addressing the various parts of Christ’s body hanging on the Cross. The last part of the poem, from which the hymn is taken, is addressed to Christ’s head, and begins “Salve caput cruentatum.” The poem is attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153).

Lyrics: O Sacred Head Surrounded (Latin: Salve caput cruentatum, St. Bernard)
O Sacred Head surrounded By crown of piercing thorn!
O bleeding Head so wounded, Reviled and put to scorn!
Death’s pallid hue comes o’er Thee, The glow of life decays,
Yet angel hosts adore Thee, And tremble as they gaze.
In this, Thy bitter passion, Good shepherd, think of me,
With Thy most sweet compassion, Unworthy though I be:
Beneath Thy cross abiding, Forever would I rest;
In Thy dear love confiding, And with Thy presence blest.

“Hail, Queen Of Heaven (The Ocean Star)”

I
Hail, queen of heaven, the ocean star,
Guide of the wanderer here below,
Thrown on life’s surge, we claim thy care,
Save us from peril and from woe.
Mother of christ, star of the sea
Pray for the wanderer, pray for me.

II
O gentle, chaste, and spotless maid,
We sinners make our prayers through thee;
Remind thy son that he has paid
The price of our iniquity.
Virgin most pure, star of the sea,
Pray for us sinner, pray for me.

III
So journers in this vale of tears to thee, blest, advocate, we cry, pity our sorrows, calm our fears and soothe With hope our misery refuge in grief, star of the sea pray for the mourner, pray for me.

IV
And while to him who reigns above
In godhead one, in persons three,
The source of life, of grace, of love,
Homage we pay on bended knee:
Do you, bright queen, star of the sea,
Pray for thy children, pray for me.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jul 15, 2024, on St. Francis as God’s musician, highlighting his use of music to express divine love and joy. This is a continuation of his series on Franciscan spirituality and the subsection, “Theology of Art,” emphasizing the place of Art in Franciscan understanding and how it should lead us to God.

Music, a high form of expression, deeply influenced Francis, who used song to express his love for God. From his youth, Francis enjoyed music, and even after his conversion, he sang praises to God. Despite facing hardships, his singing brought joy and wonder. He encouraged his friars to use music to spread God’s love. His famous “Canticle of Brother Sun” showcases his devotion. In suffering, Francis found comfort in divine music. His life, a blend of faith and art, reflected a gospel of love and music. Father encourages us to seek divine harmony, inspired by St. Francis and Our Lady.
