We are made in the likeness and image of God–dependent on him as creatures on the Creator, from whom we derive identity and dignity. Society likewise is made in, through, and for Christ. Our independence must be from anything that impedes from serving Him.

In 1884, exactly thirty-three years to the day before the momentous 1917 “Miracle of the Sun,” Pope Leo XIII overheard Satan and Our Lord talking, in a mystical experience. He heard Satan boast that he could destroy the Church within a hundred years and he heard Our Lord respond by granting him that period to try.

Many believe the appearance and messages of Our Lady of Fatima coincide with the beginning of the hundred-year assault on the Church, referred to by Pope Leo XIII. Our Lady warned of impending crises and assures us of the eventual Triumph of Her Immaculate Heart.

It has always been the habit of Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary and to seek for peace in her maternal goodness, showing that the Catholic Church has always, and with justice, put all her hope and trust in the Mother of God. And truly the Immaculate Virgin, chosen to be the Mother of God and thereby associated with Him in the work of man’s salvation, has a favor and power with her Son greater than any human or angelic creature has ever obtained or ever can gain. And as it is her greatest pleasure to grant her help and comfort to those who seek her, it cannot be doubted that she would deign, and even be anxious, to receive the aspirations of the universal Church.

This devotion, so great and so confident, to the august Queen of Heaven, has never shown forth with such brilliancy as when the militant Church of God has seemed to be endangered by the violence of heresy spread abroad, or by an intolerable moral corruption, or by the attacks of powerful enemies. Ancient and modern history and the more sacred annals of the Church bear witness to public and private supplications addressed to the Mother of God to the help she has granted in return, and to the peace and tranquility which she had obtained from God. Hence her illustrious titles of Helper, Consoler, Mighty in war, Victorious, and Peace-giver. And amongst these is specially to be commemorated that familiar title derived from the Rosary by which the signal benefits she has gained for the whole of Christianson have been solemnly perpetuated…

We believe it to be part of the designs of Providence that in these times of trial for the Church, the ancient devotion to the august Virgin should live in flourish amid the greatest part of the Christian world.

In this episode of the Masterclass in Mariology, Dr. Mark Miravalle and Dr. Robert Fastiggi discuss the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the “Mediatrix of All Graces.” Dr Miravalle refers to St. John Paul II’s term “maternal mediation,” highlighting that Mary’s role as spiritual mother includes her function as Co-redemptrix with Christ and as the distributor of all graces of redemption. This role extends from Genesis, where Mary is seen as the New Eve, continuing through the New Testament, where her intercession is seen in events such as the Annunciation (Luke 1:38 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/luke/1?38) and the Wedding at Cana (John 2:3 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/2?3). Why Saint Joseph should be regarded specially as the Patron of the Church, and why the Church in turn should promise much to herself from his guardian ship and patronage, these are the decisive causes and reasons: that he is the husband of Mary and the putative father of Jesus Christ. From this have proceeded all his dignity, grace, sanctity, and glory. Certainly the dignity of Mother of God is so exalted that nothing greater can be made; but nevertheless, because there existed between Joseph and most Blessed Mary the bond of Marriage, it is beyond all doubt that he approached nearer than any other to that most excellent dignity by which the Mother of God far surpasses all created natures.
