In his remarks prior to the Regina Caeli, the Holy Father spoke about the “spiritual presence of the Virgin Mary, alive in our midst.” On a day dedicated to Confraternities and Popular Piety, he noted that love for Mary is one of the characteristics of popular piety that “must be strengthened and well-ordered.” He invited those present to reflect on “Mary the pilgrim, who follows Jesus the Son, and goes before all of us in the journey of faith.”

Louis Maximilian explains how today’s 1st reading shows that when we suffer misfortune, we shouldn’t loose our peace, but confidently trust the Lord and be docile to His will for us, for then we will experience His blessing, whether in this life or the next. Finally, he encourages us not to mingle human respect with our piety, neither trying to hide it nor making a show out of it, but always seeking to please God alone. Let us turn to Our Lady who was always open to the work of God and ask Her to give us Her confidence in God, especially when we suffer seemingly without reason.

Alan preaches on the Gospel account of Jesus chasing the money changers out of the temple because they were profaning the holy temple of God, His Father’s House.  He relates this to three of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Fear of the Lord, Wisdom and Piety. God is present everywhere and by having a general sense of awareness of this presence, and a corresponding reverence, we will be given the grace of wisdom in counter-distinction to the insanity of the world. So we have a choice between profanity and sanity.

In the homily on Wednesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time (Feb 12, 2020), Fr. Matthias expounds on Our Lord’s teaching from today’s Gospel. Jesus instructs: “Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile” (Mk 7:18). Citing an example from real life, Father explains that we can sin in the heart, in our thoughts, even if the sin does not manifest in exterior action. To overcome interior sin, we should live in interior union with Our Lady, who instructs, corrects, guides, and teaches us interior purity of heart. This is the ultimate secret to virtue in act.

The Life of Bl. Gerard Cagnoli, Confessor, First Order (1267-1342) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Dec 3. Gerard was born in Italy and after taking care of his mother, he gave away his inheritance at her death, and became a hermit in Sicily and then a Franciscan. He was known for his kindness and piety, helping the poor, and was given the gift of prophecy and miracles.

Reflection is on the Love of retirement:
get away from the hustle of the world in order to focus on God.
Good to make retreats and to spend time alone at home rather than constant adventures.
Enables us to grow closer to God and thus grow in peace with God.

The Life of Ven. Innocent of Chiusa, Confessor, First Order (d. 1631) for the Franciscan Saint of the Day for Dec 12. Innocent of Chiusa pious from his youth with a love of solitude and as a Franciscan, practiced the virtue of obedience and had a great devotion to St Ann.

Reflection is on prayer for the living, especially the afflicted and oppressed.
We should recommend ourselves to the prayer of others, and also foster our own prayer life.
Prayers for leaders are especially needed for the leaders of our community.
