Mariology of Blessed John Duns Scotus Mariology of Blessed John Duns Scotus
by Fr. Ruggero Rosini
Translated by Fr. Peter Fehlner

In commemoration of the 700th Anniversary of his death, we are happy to present this new, ground-breaking book on the Mariology of Blessed John Duns Scotus, providing a well referenced, concise presentation of his Mariology in clear English.

Fr. Rosini has, perhaps for the first time, provided a complete, well-balanced exposition of Scotus on Our Lady, with all the many inter-connections between the mystery of Mary and the whole of theology, illustrating plainly how the subtle resolution of the most complex of theological questions was not something achieved prior to any consideration of Mary, but exactly to the contrary: by meditating ?in the spirit of prayer and devotion? (St. Francis of Assisi) on the Blessed and Immaculate Virgin in the mystery of Christ and the Church (Lumen Gentium, ch. 8, title).

Ave Maria!

Recently Friar Terrance had the opportunity to chat with Fr. Jerome Pica, F.I., and to talk with him about Bl. John Duns Scotus, a famous Franciscan scholastic philosopher/theologian who is still unknown to most of the world.  The Franciscans of the Immaculate in Italy have recently finished a full-length movie on the life of Duns Scotus.  We hope you enjoy the interview which we’ve titled “Who is John Duns Scotus…and why is he important?”, and we send our apologies for the setting of the interview…but it’s the best we could do!

Homily #100905 ( 35 min) Play – In today’s Gospel Our Lord tells us that we must love Him above all things and be well prepared in our engagement with the world. He tells us this in the form of two parables, the building of the tower and the king who contemplates going into battle. Fr. Bonaventure explains this in the context of Catholic action, where our preparation consists in building up our love of, and trust in, God who has forces vastly stronger than the enemy and that action starts with prayer and contemplation and only secondarily with physical action. Father also outlines the many ways that we are in true, open and explicit battle with the modern culture and philosophy, always relating it back to its spiritual nature.

Ave Maria!

Dr Timothy Noone, professor of Scotistic Philosophy at Catholic University, gives the 2nd talk of the Newman-Scotus Symposium presented by the Conventual Franciscans at the Washington Theological Union on Oct 22-24, 2010.  He titled his talk Blessed Johns Duns Scotus on Intuitive Cognition, Abstractive Cognition, Scientific Knowledge and Our Knowledge of God. He discusses the cognitive process according to Scotus as it compares to that of the more familiar Thomas Aquinas. His goal is to give the background of Scotus’ teaching on the process of human knowledge in order to provide a basis for discussing the similarities with Bl. John Henry Newman in his next talk the following day.

He explains that Scotus’ main objection is that Aquinas is too focused on sense knowledge as were many others of his time. Scotus makes the distinction that although this focus may be the wrong conclusion we must still start with the senses but explain how more is added by intuition to make the sense knowledge intelligible.

Scotus believed that faith and reason can coexisting in the same mind. This is not possible in the strict sense of scientific knowledge, but in the wider sense it can. Broader knowledge of God falls under the subject of metaphysics, this was common until Aquinas who was the innovator. Scotus’ innovation was the idea that the concept of being in the natural sense can be applied to God univocally. He stresses and clearly explains how this statement is actually very modest as compared to what Scotus’ detractors insist. Although we can know God through natural reason we need revelation and Scotus explains that this is because we cannot know God’s presence directly.

Fr. Ed Ondrako points out that intuition and abstraction of Scotus relates to Newman’s notional and illative concepts. Then questions are answered at the end.

Ave Maria!

We present to you the philosophy students and – if Our Lady wills it – future priests of the order of the Franciscans of the Immaculate.  Our in-house formation begins with two years of philosophy in our house of studies in Rome followed by three years of theological studies in our house in Casino, Italy.  Currently in our house of studies in Rome there are friars from all over the globe: from the U.S., Italy, Canada, the Philippines, Nigeria, and Benin, respectively.  The subjects they’re studying this semester include Biblical Greek, History of Modern Philosophy, Franciscan Philosophy, “Gnoseologia” (the study of knowledge), Introduction to the Mystery of Salvation, General Ethics, Marian Spirituality, Theology of Religious Life, and the Story of the Missions – all of which are taught in Italian.  Please remember them in your prayers and pray that they remain faithful to their calling.  Fra Anthony, Fra Ephraim, Fra Josemaria, Fra Pio Maximillian, Fra Terrance, and Friar Philameno all send their best wishes for the Christmas season!

Ave Maria!

At the Symposium titled “Sursum Actio” at Notre Dame Univ. in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner, F.I., from Jun 8-9, 2015, Fr. J. A. Wayne Hellmann, OFM Conv., Professor of Theology at Saint Louis University, gives the opening conference which he titles, “Charity in Bonaventure’s Ecclesiology, Charity in the Eucharist” the first part of which is based on a dissertation by Fr. Peter called the “The Role of Charity in the Ecclesiology of St. Bonaventure” which gave him early inspiration for his own studies. The second part is based on distinctions 8-13 of St. Bonaventure’s Commentary on the Sentences, Book IV. The talk is followed by a commentary by Fr. Peter and then a round table discussion with the other presenters.

This symposium, Sursum Actio (“Lift up your Actions” or more loosely “Lift up your Hearts”), was organized in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner after he won the Cardinal John J. Wright Marialogical Award of 2015 from the Mariological Society of America for his outstanding contributions to Mariology.
