Homily #141112n ( 14min) Play – Father gives us the events leading up to the life of St. Josaphat, his life and work, and finally his death at the hands of belligerent schismatics. He ends by telling us that two things are necessary for lasting Christian union: lives of holiness and a willingness to even lay down one’s life for the unity of the Church.

Ave Maria!
This Lenten hymn calls on God to have mercy on us. This chant is very simple and can be sung by a congregation without organ accompaniment. The Church does not want us to rejoice during Lent, so she silences the organs for the the holy season of Lent.

This chant can be used in any Liturgical season, but Lent is the most popular time this hymn is used.

Mozarabic Hymn from the 10th century.
R. Attende Domine, et miserere, quia peccavimus tibi. R. Hearken, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against Thee.
Ad te Rex summe, omnium redemptor, oculos nostros sublevamus flentes: exaudi, Christe, supplicantum preces. R. Crying, we raise our eyes to Thee, Sovereign King, Redeemer of all. Listen, Christ, to the pleas of the supplicant sinners. R.
Dextera Patris, lapis angularis, via salutis, ianua caelestis, ablue nostri maculas delicti. R. Thou art at the Right Hand of God the Father, the Keystone, the Way of salvation and Gate of Heaven, cleanse the stains of our sins. R.
Rogamus, Deus, tuam maiestatem: auribus sacris gemitus exaudi: crimina nostra placidus indulge. R. O God, we beseech Thy majesty to hear our groans; to forgive our sins. R.
Tibi fatemur crimina admissa: contrito corde pandimus occulta: tua Redemptor, pietas ignoscat. R. We confess to Thee our consented sins; we declare our hidden sins with contrite heart; in Thy mercy, O Redeemer, forgive them. R.
Innocens captus, nec repugnans ductus, testibus falsis pro impiis damnatus: quos redemisti, tu conserva, Christe. R. Thou wert captured, being innocent; brought about without resistance, condemned by impious men with false witnesses. O Christ keep safe those whom Thou hast redeemed. R.

Iesu quadragenariae

Iesu, quadragenariae
dicator abstinentiae,
qui ob salutem mentium
praeceperas ieiunium,

Adesto nunc Ecclesiae,
adesto paenitentiae,
qua supplicamus cernui
peccata nostra dilui.

Tu retroacta crimina
tua remitte gratia
et a futuris adhibe
custodiam mitissime,

Ut, expiati annuis
compunctionis actibus,
tendamus ad paschalia
digne colenda gaudia.

Te rerum universitas,
clemens, adoret, Trinitas,
et nos novi per veniam
novum canamus canticum. Amen.

AUDI, benigne Conditor,
nostras preces cum fletibus,
sacrata in abstinentia 1
fusas quadragenaria.
O MERCIFUL Creator, hear!
To us in pity bow Thine ear:
accept the tearful prayer we raise
in this our fast of forty days.
Scrutator alme cordium,
infirma tu scis virium;
ad te reversis exhibe
remissionis gratiam.
Our hearts are open, Lord, to Thee:
Thou knowest our infirmity;
pour out on all who seek Thy face
abundance of Thy pardoning grace.
Multum quidem peccavimus,
sed parce confitentibus,
tuique laude nominis 2
confer medelam languidis.
Our sins are many, this we know;
spare us, good Lord, Thy mercy show;
and for the honor of Thy name
our fainting souls to life reclaim.
Sic corpus extra conteri
dona per abstinentiam,
ieiunet ut mens sobria
a labe prorsus criminum. 3
Give us self-control that springs
from discipline of outward things,
that fasting inward secretly
the soul may purely dwell with Thee.
Praesta, beata Trinitas,
concede, simplex Unitas,
ut fructuosa sint tuis
haec parcitatis munera. Amen.
We pray Thee, Holy Trinity,
one God, unchanging Unity,
that we from this our abstinence
may reap the fruits of penitence. Amen.
