The pro-creationist documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, focuses not so much on the refutation of Darwinism, but on the suppression of the academic freedom of anyone who dissents from Darwinism. This is a brilliant coup de main, which uses the weapon of the enemy, and another example of how liberal bias really is not interested in diversity and pluralism at all. The Darwinist’s don’t know what to do when academic freedom is used against their secularist dogmas. This is from Jill Stanek of WorldNetDaily:

On March 20, two Darwinian defenders, who accepted payment to talk like buffoons on the film, tried to bust into a private screening in Minnesota.

“PZ” Myers, a University of Minnesota biology professor and proprietor of the popular atheist blog Pharyngula, was quickly expelled, much as he condones expelling professors who deviate from the monkey line, as he wrote on The Panda’s Thumb blog:

The only appropriate responses [to Intelligent Design proponents] should involve some form of righteous fury, much butt-kicking, and the public firing and humiliation of some teachers, many school board members, and vast numbers of sleazy far-right politicians.” ~ Comment #35130, PZ Myers, June 14, 2005

Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist at Oxford who wrote the book “The God Delusion,” gained entry only by foregoing his evolved surname for the formal, Clinton.

Myers then disrupted an “Expelled” conference call with reporters the next day.

These uncivilized spectacles caused a liberal mass meltdown. According to an “Expelled” press release, the “Expelled” controversy held the No. 1 slot in the blogosphere all day March 24, as registered by Nielson’s BlogPulse, and garnered over 800 Technorati results.

If we are seeing this meltdown on the left even before “Expelled” officially opens, expect a Big Bang on April 18.

Hurray!

Hat tip to Master Paul Xavier at Catholic Discussion for defending the faith. He has over one hundred comments on his post about the movie Religulous and is fending off several atheists at once. The name of the movie is a contraction of “Religion” and “Ridiculous” and seems to be the usual tripe from Bill Maher. Maybe you could give him a hand with a comment or two, but really he is holding the fort on his own. Good job Paul!

Now that we’re officially into the Fortnight for Freedom, it’s appropriate to reflect on how the themes of religious liberty, moral conscience and commitment to one’s faith in the face of pressure and persecution have been reflected in film.

Below, Register film critic Steven D. Greydanus has chosen a fortnight of worth films providentially accompanying the saint’s days we will mark within these two weeks, making a perfect complement to your Fortnight of Freedom plans.

You can find many of these films on the 1995 Vatican film list and on the Register’s list of 100 pro-Catholic movies. All 14 films are available on home video (DVD and/or Blu-ray).

June 21: A Man for All Seasons (1966)

The Fortnight for Freedom begins on the eve of the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More. The best possible film to begin the fortnight is Fred Zinnemann’s magnificent cinematic tribute to Thomas More, one of the 45 films of the Vatican film list. King Henry VIII declares “war on the Church,” obliging More… Fortnight of Films Celebrate Religious Liberty | Daily News | NCRegister.com

Ave Maria!  In this article from CNA, Jim Caviezel explains that he uses the rosary to improve his acting, thus allowing the Virgin Mary to help him portray holiness.  The new movie, Paul, Apostle of Christ, has been released at a timely moment on March 23, directly before Holy Week.  Its makers were inspired by the martyrs of Christian history, and the representation of the passion of St. Paul will provide another source of meditation to Christians.

“Passion of the Christ” star Jim Caviezel told CNA that he relied on scripture, daily Mass and the rosary to portray holiness on the big screen in “Paul, the Apostle of Christ.”

The film, which premieres March 23, depicts the persecution of the early Christians in Rome under Emperor Nero, along with an imprisoned Saint Paul conveying a message of hope at the end of his life.

“I thought that that was one of the greatest parts of the script,” Caviezel told CNA. “Here is a beat up old man in prison, facing execution. How can this man be a light to the world?”

“But it’s often through our struggles, our trials, our tragedies that triumph comes,” the Catholic actor said.

Caviezel plays the role of Saint Luke, who regularly visits Paul in prison to document his story while composing the Acts of the Apostles. The audience sees Luke serving the early Christian community in Rome as a physician, spiritual leader and writer.“

He [Luke] mentioned the Virgin Mary more than any other writer,” reflected Caviezel on portraying the Gospel evangelist, “I use the rosary to focus, to pray.”
