At the Symposium titled “Sursum Actio” at Notre Dame Univ. from Jun 8-9, 2015, in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner, F.I.,  Dr. Robert Fastiggi, Professor of Systematic Theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, gives the second conference which he titles, “Fehlner on Divine Maternity”. It is on the dogma that Mary is the Mother of God but more specifically she is the Predestined Mother of God, the Ever Virgin Mother of God, the Immaculate Mother of God and so the Mother of the Church in the order of grace and how these are all inter-connected with other Christological dogmas as is presented in the works of Fr. Peter Fehlner.

The talk is followed by a commentary by Fr. Peter and then a round table discussion with the other presenters.

This symposium, Sursum Actio (“Lift up your Actions” or more loosely “Lift up your Hearts”), was organized in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner after he won the Cardinal John J. Wright Marialogical Award of 2015 from the Mariological Society of America for his outstanding contributions to Mariology.

Mary’s apparition at Lourdes is one of a cluster of her interventions surrounding the Proclamation of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Father Angelo says these show her power and personal solicitude for individuals (including you and me). Following the Proclamation by a few years, Mary’s self-identification as “I am the Immaculate Conception” was the inspiration for St. Maximilian Kolbe’s insights into her union with the Holy Spirit and his “Personalist Mariology”. After Vatican II, the two different approaches in Mariology were pitted against each other, one emphasizing her closeness to Jesus, the other emphasizing her membership in the Church. Saint John Paul II worked to correct this, and speaks of her as Mother of the Church, and her “active and exemplary presence to each and every one of us” by which she personally impresses on the faithful her own heart and mind, as a mother with her child. Pope Benedict XVI has also emphasized that the Church is not a what, but a who, and that the “form” of the Church is not a structure, but Mary. Mary never promised miracles at Lourdes, but the fact that they happen are visible signs of her presence there and in the Church, which is the condition for a personal encounter with Christ.

Cardinal Francis Arinze gave the fourth homily for the 2016 Priests’ Retreat at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center, where he explains the relationship between Jesus and Mary by pointing out that she was predestined by Him from before time began to be His Mother and the Mother of His Body, the Church. This brings clarity to all the many ways that she is prefigured in the Old Testament and we can see the fittingness of the many prerogatives and devotions that Christians have joyfully honored her with from the earliest times of the Church.
