Instruction “Dignitas personæ“

on some bioethical questions

Introduction

1. The dignity of a person must be recognized in every human being from conception to natural death. This fundamental principle expresses a great “yes” to human life and must be at the center of ethical reflection on biomedical research, which has an ever greater importance in today’s world. The Church’s Magisterium has frequently intervened to clarify and resolve moral questions in this area. The Instruction Donum vitae was particularly significant. And now, twenty years after its publication, it is appropriate to bring it up to date.

The teaching of Donum vitae remains completely valid, both with regard to the principles on which it is based and the moral evaluations which it expresses. However, new biomedical technologies which have been introduced in the critical area of human life and the family have given rise to further questions, in particular in the field of research on human embryos, the use of stem cells for therapeutic purposes, as well as in other areas of experimental medicine. These new questions require answers.

Dawn Eden, who last year gave us the great story of her conversion through St. Maximilian Kolbe and G.K. Chesterton, recently returned to Griswold, CT, and we accosted her for another interview which she graciously granted. This time she talks about her studies for her Masters in Moral Theology at Dominican House of Studies in DC  and how they relate to current issues in our society. In particular she refers to the recent debate on Christopher West’s interpretation of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. She relates what she has found about how morality was taught before and after the Second Vatican Council and how this compares with West’s assertion that Catholic morality was very prudish before the Council. It was this assertion that was the basis for his very controversial Nightline interview where he favorably compared John Paul II to Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy, since both, in their own way, saved us from this supposed prudery. Listen to Dawn’s fair, informative analysis of this controversy.

After three years of being guardian at Our Lady of Guadalupe Friary in Griswold, CT, USA (which is headquarters for AirMaria) Fr. Ignatius will be leaving for Italy on October 13th to continue his studies for his doctorate in Moral Theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. Fr. Dominic Murphy, who has been transferred from New Bedford, MA where he was guardian, has already assumed the role of guardian at the friary and you can see his first homily on AirMaria here.

We will definitely miss you, Fr. Ignatius, and we will pray for the success of your studies and for every grace from God. Arrivederci!
