Mary continues this mission in her appearance to Juan Diego in Mexico City in 1531, bringing about the conversion of Mexico.

Some of the words of Our Lady to St. Juan Diego:

Know for certain, littlest of my sons, that I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God through Whom everything lives, the Lord of all things near and far, the Master of heaven and earth.

I wish and intensely desire that in this place my sanctuary be erected. Here I will demonstrate and exhibit and give all my love, my compassion, my help and my protection to the people. I am your merciful Mother. The merciful Mother of all of you who live united in this land, and of all mankind, of all those who love me. Here I will hear their weeping, their sorrow, and will remedy, and alleviate all their multiple sufferings, necessities and misfortunes.

Listen, put it into your heart, my youngest and dearest son, that the thing that frightens you, the thing that afflicts you, is nothing: do not let it disturb you, Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need something more? Let nothing else worry you or disturb you.

In 1531, the Mother of God appeared to a native Mexican named Juan Diego. She would ask him to have the bishop build a church there at the apparition site. When the bishop asked for a sign, roses were given but more than that, the image of the Mother was on the cactus fiber tilma of St. Juan Diego and fibers that should not last more than 20 years are still in perfect condition almost 500 years later. And within a decade of the apparition, almost all of Mexico was Roman Catholic.

Bonaventure preaches on the Gospel that calls John the Baptist the greatest man born of a woman, that is, of the old dispensation and he was the precursor of the Messiah and prepared his people for the new dispensation. Juan Diego also was a transitional saint who ushered in the new era of Christianity to Mexico bringing an end to the culture of death in the Aztec empire where human sacrifice was the daily norm. May the prayers of Juan Diego bring a similar end to the culture of death in our modern world.

Our Lady demonstrated her maternal care in tenderness in this apparition more than any of her other apparitions. We need to turn to Mary with full confidence in her maternal care for us, and when we place all our confidence in her, she will be able to work her marvels in us, glorifying God, as she did at Tepeyac Hill 483 years ago today.

Homily #141212n ( 06min) Play – Pope Francis has been highlighting Our Lady as the “Untier of Knots,” for it is by Her obedience that the knot tied by Eve’s disobedience is undone, and Our Lady can also untie the knots of sin and its consequences in our lives as well. We see this extraordinarily in Her visit to Mexico in 1531, after which the natives began to, through Mary, come to Christ, and within eight years, a torrent of nine million people were baptized by the missionaries. If we turn to Her, She will untie the knots we have tied in our own lives, and especially in our souls. And then, after this, She will be able to also untie the knots in our families, in the Church, our nation, and the entire world.
