Ave Maria!

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Ave Maria!

What of those times when you are in need of an answer but time doesn’t permit for prayers in petition for a day or more? Mother Teresa of Calcutta knew what to do. She turned to our Mother, and prayed her “Flying Novena.”Msgr. Leo Maasburg, her friend and spiritual advisor, explained in his book Mother Teresa of Calcutta: A Personal Portrait that it was “Mother Teresa’s spiritual rapid-fire weapon. It consisted of ten Memorares — not nine, as you might expect from the word novena. Novenas lasting nine days were quite common among the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. But given the host of problems that were brought to Mother Teresa’s attention, not to mention the pace at which she traveled, it was often just not possible to allow nine days for an answer from Celestial Management. And so she invented the Quick Novena.” For some reason he calls it by this name rather than the “Flying Novena” which her Missionaries of Charity continue to use and pray.“Here are the words of the centuries-old Memorare:

“Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your clemency hear and answer me. Amen.”

“Mother Teresa used this prayer constantly: for petitions for the cure of a sick child, before important discussions or when passports went missing, to request…

On the memorial of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (Cistercian Abbot, Doctor of the Church, Aug 20, 2019), Father Andre relates the conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne, obtained when he prayed a novena of the Memorare prayer (actually misattributed to St. Bernard), to the insights of St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, another great Marian saint. Both understood and taught the wisdom that will save the souls of so many who are now far from God: it is through the Immaculate Heart of Mary that conversion will be obtained for them. Our task is to help win souls back to God, by commending them to Our Blessed Lady.

On the memorial of St. Martin of Tours (Nov 11, 2019, also Veterans Day), Fr. Josemaria expounds on today’s Gospel and Our Lord’s exhortation to “Be on your guard!” (Lk 17:3). The key to not only spiritual survival but to personal and social renewal is for good people to overcome evil by actively doing good works.

The principle of solidarity that links all human beings one to another is the reason our individual good works benefit all of society. To aid and abet those who would spread evil by their wicked deeds, we need only sit back and do nothing. To “overcome evil with good” (Rom 12:21), we must do the good!

To read about the concept of solidarity, see Pope St. John Paul II’s apostolic exhortation “RECONCILIATION AND PENANCE” (Reconciliatio et Paenitentia) para. 16, heading:  “Personal Sin and Social Sin” (http://w2.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/apost_exhortations/documents/hf_jp-ii_exh_02121984_reconciliatio-et-paenitentia.html

Ave Maria!

Fr. Matthias on the First Saturday of January 2023, relates the account of the miraculous, instantaneous conversion of the anti-Catholic Jew Alphonse Ratisbonne through an apparition of Mary, who became a priest and worked to convert his fellow Jews. He then invites us to become a part of this story by imitating Alfonse’s zeal by inviting others to come to the Church. He recites the Memorare that was instrumental in Alphonse’s conversion. Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington on Jan 07, 2023, where he continues his reflection on the conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne but focuses on the role of Mary as a mediator of graces, especially through devotions such as wearing the miraculous medal and praying the Memorare.

Some graces are given to us only through Our Lady, and only by Consecration to Mary will all graces be given.

He points to the Wedding feast at Cana, where Our Lady prompts our Lord to do His first miracle

The grace of that first miracle would not have happened since He said it was not His hour

And she was there because she was invited along with Jesus and his apostles.

We should ask Mary for the grace to become great Christians. Once we have done this, then all the graces will flow.

The Good wine is kept until Our Lady intercedes

Miraculous medal apparition, the rays from the rings on her fingers did not all have rays. These represent those graces that were not given because nobody asked for them

To St Catherine Labore, if you wear this medal, many graces will be given. It is us saying, “I want those graces”

Need to wear and share the medal with others.

This is a continuation of a talk from our 1st Saturday Devotion:

Fr Matthias gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jan 24, 2023, the memorial of St Francis de Sales, giving a biography of him and how he worked to bring Protestants back into the Church near Geneva, Switzerland, yet had temptations to despair based on some of the teachings of the Protestants as to whether he was predestined to hell. He overcame this through his profound devotion to Mary.

Ave Maria!

Listen to this inspirational talk by Fr. Thomas Haan from the Diocese of Lafayette as he gives the first talk for our Fall Marian Day of Reflection on the power of the intercession of the Virgin Mary to guide us through the battles and strife of our day whether they be the storms of bad weather or scandals and difficulties in the Church. He advocates remaining calm and ignoring those who stir up trouble.

Fr Haan gracefully intertwines personal adventures with the historical and spiritual significance of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Battle of Lepanto. Through the lens of a challenging seafaring experience, he draws parallels to the Christian forces overcoming adversities at Lepanto, emphasizing the power of prayer and Mary’s intercession. His story invites contemplation on faith’s role in navigating life’s tumultuous waters, encouraging a deeper engagement with the Rosary as a source of spiritual fortification. These reflections point to the enduring legacy of faith amidst worldly trials, inspiring hope and resilience as we commemorate this sacred feast and reflect on the broader voyage of humanity toward divine union.
