MaryCast Specials #77 ( 09min) Play – Dr. Mark Miravalle gives a compelling argument for how the proclamation of the 5th Marian Dogma can bring about a new Pentecost since Mary was so instrumental for the first one where the Holy Spirit, her spouse, descended on the Apostles. He mentions the comparison that St. Maximilian Kolbe made of the spousal relationship between Mary and the Holy Spirit with that of the union of two natures, human and divine, in the person of Jesus Christ.

The dogma of the Immaculate Conception is phrased negatively–that Mary never was touched by sin–but it has a very positive meaning as expressed in Her God-given name of “Full of Grace”. Historically, the greatest defender of this dogma was the Franciscan Order, and it was Bl. John Duns Scotus that provided the theological understanding that was later proclaimed as dogma. Saint Maximilian Kolbe saw this dogma as a ‘blueprint’ of the Church, and that getting the dogma proclaimed was only as the first half of the Franciscan Order’s calling. Now that the dogma was proclaimed, it was time to incorporate it into the life of the Church by the spirituality of Total Consecration to the Immaculate. Let us make the act, let us live the life, let us allow Her to use us as instruments for the salvation and sanctification of souls.

Mary’s apparition at Lourdes is one of a cluster of her interventions surrounding the Proclamation of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Father Angelo says these show her power and personal solicitude for individuals (including you and me). Following the Proclamation by a few years, Mary’s self-identification as “I am the Immaculate Conception” was the inspiration for St. Maximilian Kolbe’s insights into her union with the Holy Spirit and his “Personalist Mariology”. After Vatican II, the two different approaches in Mariology were pitted against each other, one emphasizing her closeness to Jesus, the other emphasizing her membership in the Church. Saint John Paul II worked to correct this, and speaks of her as Mother of the Church, and her “active and exemplary presence to each and every one of us” by which she personally impresses on the faithful her own heart and mind, as a mother with her child. Pope Benedict XVI has also emphasized that the Church is not a what, but a who, and that the “form” of the Church is not a structure, but Mary. Mary never promised miracles at Lourdes, but the fact that they happen are visible signs of her presence there and in the Church, which is the condition for a personal encounter with Christ.

Dr. J. Isaac Goff leads us through Chapter 3 of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner’s The Theologian of Auschwitz.
Chapter Two presented Kolbe to us as a proper and “critical” theologian, as in one who remains intellectually true but continues to integrate mind and heart, so both wise and intelligent.
Chapter Three recapitulates this, and shows that Kolbe’s analysis is not only theologically valid, but profoundly Franciscan and contemplative. At the heart of the Franciscan Charism is the Cause of the Immaculate, first to establish the truth of Her Immaculate Conception, and now to incorporate that into the life of the Church.
However, Father Peter Damian Fehlner is like Saint Bonaventure in that he speaks of everything everywhere.
Thus topics treated are expansive. We speak of:
  • The true formulation of the Critical Question, the erroneous formulation of it by modern philosophy, and the response to it from Bonaventure.
  • The proper use of the intellect and will.
  • Natural and supernatural faith.
  • The limits of subjectivity and the experience of conscience.
  • The Bonaventurian structure of the soul and how that is manifested in the structure of theology.
  • Language and mystical experience.
  • The Absolute Primacy of Christ and the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
  • Contemplation and Mission.
  • The phrase Potuit, Decuit, ergo Fecit, oft tied to Franciscan Theology.
  • Full resolution of philosophy is found in Theology.
  • That there is always a personal and voluntary aspect to knowing.
  • Paradigms and different theological planets existing within the Church.
  • Theological Metaphysics and Biblical Theology.

Ave Maria!
