O holy Mother, sweet and fair to see,
for us beseech the King, your dearest Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ, to death for us delivered:
that in his pitying clemency, and by virtue of his most holy incarnation
and bitter death, he may pardon our sins.
 
Holy Virgin Mary, among all the women of the world,
there is none like you. You are the daughter and handmaid of the most high King,
Father of heaven. You are the mother of our most holy Lord Jesus Christ.
You are the bride of the Holy Spirit. Pray for us, with St. Michael the archangel,
and all the powers of heaven and all the saints, to your most holy and beloved Son,

1. At the cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful mother weeping,
close to Jesus to the last

2. Through her heart, his sorrow sharing,
all his bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword had passed.

3. Oh how sad and sore distressed
was that mother highly blessed,
of the sole-begotten One!

4. Christ above in torment hangs;
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.

5. Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep
Christ’s dear Mother to behold?

6. Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Mother’s pain untold?

7. For the sins of His own nation
saw Him hang in desolation,
all with bloody scourges rent.

8. Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled,
she beheld her tender child,
till His Spirit forth he sent.

9. O, thou Mother, fount of love,
touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord.

10. Make me feel as thou has felt;
make my soul to glow and melt
with the love of Christ our Lord.

11. Holy Mother, pierce me through;
in my heart each wound renew
of my Saviour crucified.

12. Let met share with thee his pain,
who for all my sins was slain,
who for me in torments died.

13. Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning Him Who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live.

14. By the cross with thee to stay,
there with thee to weep and pray,
this I ask of thee to give.

15. Virgin, of all virgins blest,
O refuse not my request:
let me in thy weeping share

16. Let me, to my latest breath,
in my body bear the death
of that dying Son of thine.

17. Wounded with his every wound,
steep my soul till it hath swooned
in His very blood away.

18. Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
lest in flames I burn and die,
in that awful judgment day.

19. Christ, when thou shalt call me hence,
be Thy mother my defense,
be Thy cross my victory.

20. While my body here decays,
may my soul Thy goodness praise,
safe in Paradise with Thee. Amen.

This is the beautiul yet sad chant that is often heard during the Stations of the Cross in Lent. It would be hard to replace such a beautiful hymn with anything else! This chant has been in use for many centuries, so who are we to think we’ve outgrown it? Indeed, we need to medidate on Our Lady’s Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart more now that ever before, because she is our only hope.

Our Lady shared in the entire Passion, suffering everything with Jesus — and now she shares the same proportion of the glory of the risen Christ. Pray to Our Lady, put yourself completely in her hands. She alone can keep you from going astray in so many ways. She who is the mother of the Truth will keep you on the sure path, avoiding every error and deception. She will teach you humility, faith, love, and all the virtues she practiced so perfectly. She will inevitably lead you closer to Christ; for where the Blessed Mother is, there is Christ. When was that ever not true? Even on Calvary, she stood (not lay fainting) by the cross, the sword of sorrow piercing her most beautiful heart.

Fr. Peter gives the last presentation at the Behold Your Mother Marian Conference receiving a standing ovation. The title of his talk is Mariae Advocatae Causa: The Marian Issue in the Church Today. He discusses with his usual exuberance why the Marian titles of Coredemptrix, Mediatrix and Advocate are central to the Church today. Come listen as Fr. At the Behold Your Mother Marian Conference at Our Lady of the Greenwood in Indiana in 2007, Scott Hahn, Fr. Peter Fehlner, Raymond de Souza and Dr. Mark Miravalle join a Panel Discussion with Dana Scallon as the MC on the possible definition of the 5th Marian Dogma, answering specific questions submitted by the audience. The first Question is hard to follow because of audio problems but these get resolved quickly and the speakers handle all this so gracefully:

00:30 – Mary as the fifth mark of the the Church, Fr. Peter answers that Mary Mediatrix relates to the other four marks of the Church especially the Pope.

06:08 – How is Mary Advocate when the Holy Spirit is Advocate? Dr. Miravalle answers with the principle of analogy and how all of us are called to be mediators and advocates.

08:45 – Is Catholic objection to 5th Dogma based on fear of having to defend it to Protestants and others? Scott Hahn answers that it is easy to defend what is clearly and unambiguously taught.

12:26 – How is Marian Coredemption distinguished from and does not impinge on the ordained priesthood? – Fr. Peter answers that their similarity is based on the joint predestination of Christ and Mary but they are distinct in the roles that each participates in and this without diminishing the role and importance of the other. He relates this to total consecration of ourselves to Mary. Scott Hahn, priest is father in the Church and Mary is Mother so each are distinct. Mark Miravalle, Mary was never ordained. Raymond de Souza, distinction is sacrificial role of priests.

20:15 – How is Mary’s Perpetual Virginity consistent with Catholic openness to life? – Raymond de Souza, there is no inconsistency because openess to life does not exclude those called to a special life of consecration like priesthood. Mark Miravalle, looking at her three part virginity, she is fruitful. Scott Hahn, her yes is inherently motherly, fruitfully mothering everyone. Fr. Peter adds, John Duns Scotus’ agrees, virginal motherhood is the more perfect kind.

28:32 – Is the Coredemptrix biblical? – Scott Hahn, need to read the Bible in context of the magisterium and not by what is stressed quantitatively. Mark Miravalle, Mary kept a low profile to avoid being mistaken as a goddess. Raymond de Souza St. Louis de Montfort there will be a great Marian age, so different focus for different times. Fr. Peter St Bonaventure Mary is on every page, Mary of Agreda, Mary wants us to learn to love Jesus as she did.

35:39 – Why does Jesus call Mary “Woman” at wedding feast? – Scot Hahn, he is evoking Genesis, capturing her role as divine Daughter, Spouse and Mother. So he is ushering in New Covenant with Mary participating. Mark Miravalle, the woman is used throughout the Bible and connects Mary to all of these. Raymond de Souza some languages use “Woman” for mother or wife.  Fr. Peter puts a metaphysical spin on it by saying Mary is “woman” and includes and invites all women to participate in her role.

At the Behold Your Mother Marian Conference at Our Lady of the Greenwood in Indiana in 2007, Fr. Pablo Straub, C.Ss.R. gives the second talk on Mary as Coredemptrix, Mediatrix and Advocate and how this relates to and spotlights the sacrifice of Christ rather than diverts our attention from it.  He points out the basis of the her mediation is the Immaculate Conception which was her salvation and then her Divine Maternity and finally her presence at the foot of the Cross, suffering with Him, uniting her will with His. This all points to how God wants to work our Salvation with Mary’s help and this points to the need for our participation as well.

At the Behold Your Mother Marian Conference at Our Lady of the Greenwood in Indiana in 2007, Dr. Mark Miravalle gives his talk on on the need for the Fifth Marian Dogma of Coredemptrix, Mediatrix and Advocate. He starts with how much suffering a mother undergoes when her child suffers and how this points to her cooperation which fits in with the divine will. He also points to many other saints, popes, and theologians who call her Coredemptrix. He then rebuts many of the common objections to the doctrine by going to the sources and pointing out that all of our actions as Christians involves a meditational role.
