Homily #100729 ( 09min) Play – In Gospel for the memorial of St Martha Our Lord arrives at the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus after Lazarus dies. Here Martha runs out to greet Our Lord and expresses her great faith in Him to raise up her brother. This shows how much progress she has made since the last visit of Our Lord when He reprimanded her for being too concerned with many things. Let us pray for the grace to progress like Martha.

Meditation:
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
John 11:5

Archbishop Alban Goodier, S.J.:
And the name of Martha comes first. He could not blame her zeal; He could not find fault with her self-sacrificing charity. Nevertheless there was something else which, for the sake of all mankind, He must seize this occasion to defend. To work for Him was good, but to love Him was better; to serve Him was a glory, but to live with Him was a greater glory still. It was noble to be His handmaiden, but to be blessed among women was nobler. To seek the means to please Him was holy, but to seek first the  Kingdom  of  God  and His justice was to secure that all the rest would come. Martha stood for much that was best in the world, but Mary represented something more that transcended all the rest; indeed without it all the rest would be of little worth.
The Public Life of Jesus Christ (Burns, Oates & Wasbourne: London,  1930)

Resolution:
Today I will work on “service with love” in order to imitate the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady was able to live an exemplary life which combined the best aspects of the service of St. Martha and the contemplative prayer of St.  Mary.

Marian Vow:
The members of M.I.M., if they live faithfully their consecration, become, in this way, “little mediators”, as St. Maximilian says, at the unconditional service of the universal Mediatrix, ready, as “docile instruments”, to work as missionaries and with the missionary spirit in the Church and in the family, in society and in each field of labor; ready also, according to possibilities and obedience, to go themselves even to the missions “Ad gentes” (To the Nations) to save the souls of brothers who are still living “in the shadow of death” (Lk 1, 79).

Marian Seraphic Pathways,  Directory #58

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

Homily #101005 ( 10min) Play – Fr. Dominic preaches on the Gospel story of the two sisters Martha and Mary where Mary sits at the feet of our Lord listening while Martha complains that she is left with all the work. He relates these two sisters the two forms of life, the contemplative by Mary and the active by Martha. He points out that both are needed but the contemplative is more important as Our Lord says, “Mary has chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Homily #130721b ( 23min) Play – Fr. Casey gives the Sunday homily which is also the closing of the retreat here titled the ‘”The Spiritual Combat of Our Time”. Based on the Gospel of today with Martha complaining that her sister Mary is not helping and Jesus replying that she has chosen the better part, Fr. Casey stresses the importance of listing to Christ, attentive to his word, starting with scripture as Vatican II insists all Catholics should have:

  • Direct access to the Bible
  • prayer based on the bible
  • Knowledge of Scripture is knowledge of Christ

And also with prayer.

The essence of mental prayer is intimate friendship and heart to heart conversation with the One that you love.

Prayer must be a family event, part of the family culture, pass on a prayerful attitude to our children. Teens are constantly distracted, on the run, all their little cares. Technology, iPhones, etc. All of which distracts them from God. Need to be convinced of His goodness and graces and our inadequacy. Requires humility.

Need to have a balance of prayer and active life, the exact formula of which will be dictated by our state in life, married, single, religious. Even those engaged directly in apostolic work needs to pray. In fact, even more so since prayer is the soul of the apostolate. We must work with God. Without him we can do nothing.

Homily #140729n ( 07min) Play – Father points out that today’s saint, Martha, is seen as an image of the active life, and as the Gospel shows us, the contemplative life, exemplified in her sister Mary, is higher than the active life, and even in the active life, contemplation is necessary. To conclude, Father reads a commentary on this verse (the Navarre Bible) which shows how we may infuse the spirit of prayer into all our daily actions, especially the most mundane.

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jul 21, 2019 gives the closing homily for the retreat on Heroic Virtue on how God’s timing is not our timing and therefore we must be patient and be content in the presence of the Lord. He uses the examples from the readings of Abraham who was waiting for a son promised him and Martha and Mary, where Mary was so content to remain in the presence of the Lord.

On the Memorial of St. Martha, disciple and friend of Jesus (Jul 29, 2019) Fr. Alan notes that although her faith was great and obtained miracles from Jesus (raising her dead brother), she was also capable of human frailty. Had she been more focused on Jesus and his will, she wouldn’t have been so anxious, wouldn’t have misjudged priorities. However, because of her sincerity and goodness, and confidence in the Lord, and because of Jesus’ own loving goodness, even her error became a blessed teaching moment of benefit for all Christ’s disciples.
