Watch this video by Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner, FI, STD as he gives a short biography of Mother Mary of Agreda and how her Marian theology, which is so often portrayed as being opposed to Vatican II, is actually very much in line with it, anticipating the Council by 300 years.

Fr. Peter highlights a new book on this subject, Venerable Mother Agreda and the Mariology of Vatican II by Enrique Llamas, OCD, STD of the International Pontifical Marian Academy, which has been published by the Academy of the Immaculate. A heated discussion on this topic is being carried on at Mark Shea’s blog under the post “… skeptical that … ‘Mary suffered no birth pains'”. A comment by Sandra Miesel of Crisis Magazine about halfway down the comment stack started it off.

I saw this from Mark Shea at the Register and thought our readers would be interested. He is a convert from Evangelicalism.

It once seemed perfectly obvious to me that Catholics honored Mary too much. All those feasts, rosaries, icons, statues and whatnot were ridiculously excessive. Yes, the gospel of Luke said something about her being “blessed” and yes I thought her a good person. But that was that.

No Mary, No Salvation

People who celebrated her or called her “Mother” or did all the million things which Catholic piety encourages bordered on idolatry. It was all too much. Jesus, after all, is our Savior, not Mary.

However, after looking at the gospel of Luke afresh and thinking more and more about the humanity of Jesus Christ, some things dawned on me. For it turns out that Luke said more than “something” about Mary. He reports that . . .

In today’s Gospel, the Lord teaches His disciples how to pray: “Our Father…” He teaches the key to obtaining mercy: “If you forgive men their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.” Repeating the Our Father, along with the other prayers of the Rosary help us to be more united to God, and conscious of the need to practice mercy.
