This parish in downtown Los Angeles has had a revival and it looks like it is centered on Our Lady!

by Luis Sinco, Los Angeles Times

On Saturday, I was assigned to photograph the Third Annual Grand Marian Procession at La Placita Church in downtown Los Angeles.

Organized by a Catholic devotional society called the Queen of Angels Foundation, the event featured a parade of Catholic faithful wheeling a float, adorned with flowers and a statue of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, through the streets of L.A. to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

On a warm, sunny afternoon, hundreds of people joined the procession, which traces its roots to the founding of the city 232 years ago, when a small band of settlers held a Mass and cavalcade to honor the Virgin, or Lady of the Angels, to whom they dedicated and named their new outpost.

The settlers came from Mexico, which then was a colony of Spain – and this weekend’s festivities had a distinctly Latino flavor, with participants, dancers and musicians largely reflecting cultures from south of the border.

It struck me that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Latinos now form a majority of the population in the metropolitan pueblo of 21st century Los Angeles, which continues to attract people from all corners of the Earth – and especially Mexico and Central America.

It is fitting that this old tradition is experiencing a modern revival.

There seems to be a holy rivalry between LA and NY as to who is more devoted to Our Lady! It seems both have a good case so this could be hotly contested. We will keep you posted on any developments or … escalations.

Many people, Catholic or not, are unaware that the city of Los Angeles is dedicated to and named after the Virgin Mary. On September 4, 1781, Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, with the assistance of two Franciscan priests, gave the village its official name, El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula which translates to mean “The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of the Porziuncola River.” Porziuncola, is a small church in the village of Santa Maria degli Angeli, (Italian: St. Mary of the Angels…there’s an obvious pattern here) located two miles north of Assisi, Umbria, Italy; the place where the Franciscan movement started. The word porziuncola is an Italian word meaning “a small portion of land” and refers to the fact that a Benedictine abbot of Monte Subasio gave the chapel to St. Francis of Assisi in 1208 on condition that the saint made it the motherhouse of his order.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Aug 02, 2022, the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula, explains the importance of the Portiuncula Chapel as well as Our Lady and the angels to the Franciscan Order.

Notes:

St Fran attached to it, but it sanctified him

LA is named after it.

Received a message to rebuild my church at the chapel, which was in ruins, so he started there

Mary was to be central to the Franciscan spirituality in the joint predestination of Christ and Mary

Mary was by nature beneath the angels but by grace above all angels

Acceptance of this was part of the test of Lucifer and his angels, which they failed, hardening them in

Angel Gabriel at the announcement, To joseph regarding Mary, and at Bethlehem

Also, a tradition that many angels always accompanied Mary, but especially on the trip to Egypt

He instructed all his fears to always hold onto the chapel

Franciscan called the Seraphic Order, the order of fiery angels

Francis asked Mary to ask her Son to give a plenary indulgence at the Portiuncula and received it

Now it is applied to all Franciscan Chaples on this day

Ave Maria!
