Homily #080406 ( 10min) Play – In this special Traditional Latin Mass the reading for the day is Jesus the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sake of his sheep. We, the sheep, are in great need of a shepherd to?be gathered into one fold,?and to be fed with the truth, who is Jesus himself, the bread of life. Fr compares this with the order of the Mass and to the work of the Holy Father, Christ’s Vicar.

The Pope Honorius' III dream of St Francis holding up the Lateran Basilica

Ave Maria!

Well, it has been a busy week or so in the news for the FI’s in regard to our accelerating adoption of the Extraordinary Form (EF) of the Mass. Starting last week February 27 we were featured on Fr. Zuhlsdorf’s blog and picked by the New Liturgical Movement about upcoming EF Masses involving the FIs. The first will be the ordinations of five FIs in our friary in Tarqinia, Italy on the 25th of March, the Annunciation. They will be ordained by Bishop Raymond Burke, recently made head of the Roman Apostolic Signatura and he will be celebrating the Mass in the Extraordinary Form. One of the ordinees will be an American, Fra John Lorenzo. The article goes on to mention that another EF Mass will be in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran on the 800th anniversary of the approval of the Rule of St. Francis by Pope Honorius III on April 16 and will be celebrated by Fr. Stefano Manelli the founder of the FIs, a great honor indeed.
Then on March 4 the Latin Mass Society published a wonderful  article about our Contemplative Sisters in Cornwall, England about how they have adopted the 1962 Missal and the Divine Office. This was picked up by Fr. Zuhlsdorf, Rorate Caeli, New Liturgical Movement, and Damian Thompson of The Telegraph. You can see pictures and some history of the Sister’s house here.

All of these articles have generated many comments and discussion on the blogs. All we can say is thanks for all the great articles and Glory be to God.

Ave Maria!

First Solemn Pontifical Mass by a ruling Filipino bishop in his diocese since 1970

On April 27, 2010, feast of St. Peter Canisius, His Excellency Antonio Tobias, Bishop of Novaliches, offered Solemn Pontifical Mass in the convent chapel of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate in his diocese. He was assisted by priests and brothers belonging to the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate.

This Mass is only the second Solemn Pontifical Mass to be celebrated by a Filipino bishop since September 14, 2007 (the first one had been offered by Bishop Camilo Gregorio of the Prelature of Batanes on September 14, 2008 — see this for a report on that Mass), and the first to be offered by a Filipino Ordinary in his own diocese since 1970.

Bishop Tobias had offered Solemn Pontifical Mass for the 2003 international colloquium of the Centre International d’Etudes Liturgiques in France, and a “Low Mass with Solemnity” last year, also in the convent of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Nov 17, 2022, on what the church says about going to SSPX masses. Can we go there?

The question is actually three separate but related questions:

1 – Can I attend?

2 – Does it fulfill the Sunday obligation?

3 – Can I receive communion?

Can I attend an SSPX? No, because they do not have faculties. So their mass is illicit and therefore sacrilegious to receive.

Can I receive communion? No, you can not.

Does it fulfill Can. 1248 must receive at a Catholic parish. – https://www.vatican.va/archive/cod-iuris-canonici/eng/documents/cic_lib4-cann1244-1253_en.html

Father covers the correspondence and statements of Msgr. Camille Perl, Secretary of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, which were firmly and consistently against attending the SSPX masses, contrary to SSPX assertions.

An objection is that Can. 844 overrules Can 1248, which says we can attend non-catholic services, but this is only under extreme situations where there are no Catholic Churches available, and even then it does not mean that you will fulfill your Sunday obligation, only the divine precept to worship – https://www.vatican.va/archive/cod-iuris-canonici/eng/documents/cic_lib4-cann834-878_en.html#BOOK_IV

Lack of access to a 1962 Latin Mass does not constitute an extreme situation.

There is a distinction between Divine law and Church law. – Divine law is to worship God in some way on Sunday, Church law says you must go to a Catholic parish mass each Sunday.

In “Ecclesia Dei Adflicta,” 5c that the faithful should “cease their support in any way for that movement” & that “formal adherence to the schism … carries the penalty of excommunication decreed by the Church’s law” https://www.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/motu_proprio/documents/hf_jp-ii_motu-proprio_02071988_ecclesia-dei.html

Can he ever attend a mass? Not necessarily sinful but unwise at the very least, given the schismatic mentality that prevails.

Sin to knowingly put yourself in an occasion of sin.

Church has bent over to bring them back in an ecumenical spirit

Does any diocese allow attending or receiving communion? Not that I know, but ask your bishop

Pope Francis is accused

Ask yourself, Why would I attend

Am I more attached to the old mass than to the will of God?

“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble,” 1 Pt 5:5 and Jas 4:6
