News – CT Judiciary Committee Continues its Suicidal Agenda, Literally

Connecticut Judiciary Committee can’t seem to take a hint. Now they’ve introduced Bill 1138 for Euthanasia!! Have they totally lost their minds in Hartford??!!! Let me guess … Lawlor and McDonald. They’re the only ones with the gall to do this. If I read their site correctly, the hearing will be on Friday, March 20th 10am in LOB Room 2D.

News – Assisted Suicide Self-destructs in Connecticut

Ding-Dong the suicide bill is dead. Seems Sen. McDonald and Rep. Lawlor are having their difficulties since they tried to destroy the Catholic Church in Connecticut last week. Their pet bill, SB 1138 for assisted suicide, was pulled yesterday after a huge outcry from the citizens of CT. Given this bill was probably one of their key moves in their seemingly relentless crusade for the culture of death, it shows how badly their political health has been damaged. The assisted suicide bill from co-chairs Senator McDonald and Representative Lawlor, scheduled for a public hearing before the Judiciary Committee on March 20th, appears to be dead for this session. The reason for pulling SB1138 off the agenda is reported to be “clerical error.” Read more on his blog

Fi News – A Long, Sad Day at the CT Capitol

Well, it was a busy day! At about 7am we found out that the Judiciary Committee headed by McDonald and Lawlor (who pushed the anti-Catholic bill sb1098 a couple of weeks ago) had another surprise hearing at 12 noon today. We were not the only ones who were surprised. Even Senators and Representatives in the same committee were surprised. This time it was to be the vote on SB899 which is the legislative codification of the Kerrigan Supreme Court of CT case that brought in same-sex ‘marriage’. We rushed to put together our live streaming equipment that was in total disarray from our live streaming of the Youth Pro-life Conference on Saturday. We threw everything into the car, including ourselves and headed off to Hartford, an hour away, only to find out that we had to wait another hour while the committee went into private caucus sessions until 1pm. Although we were caught off guard it seemed that the other side, in favor of the bill, was there in force. We are never out numbered at these events. Seems they got the word and we did not. Funny that! It was the beginning of a difficult, often nauseating day listening to Senators and Representatives squashing every single effort to protect religious liberties (except one) by pummeling those that were proposing very reasonable amendments with thousands of inane questions. The result is that we have about the same protections of our rights to conscientious objections as did Massachusetts where Catholic Charities had to cease their child adoption efforts because the state was forcing them to place kids with same sex couples. We went to the Connecticut State Capitol yesterday to get the scoop on the efforts to protect religious freedom in the face of the impending vote on the same-sex ‘marriage’ bill and Peter Wolfgang of the Family Institute of CT (FIC) generously gave the Roving Reporter and interview. As predicted, the bill passed the Senate and the House but not before having some important amendments attached that at least partially protect foundational liberties thanks to the action of FIC, the Knights of Columbus, the National Organization for Marriage and the 20,000 Connecticut citizens who called their legislators. The Hartford Currant has a full story of some of the secular points but as Peter Wolfgang points out in one of the FIC’s emails:

Make no mistake: The amendment is not perfect and SB 899 itself is the result of an illegitimate court ruling, not the will of the people. … An FIC-supported amendment to require parents be notified before “gay-friendly” curricula are taught in schools and be allowed to “opt out” was defeated in the Senate and the House. Watch for more information on that vote and what you can do about it.

Well, most of the points that FIC and friends pushed for were added to the amendment which had been rejected by the Judiciary Committee a few weeks earlier. A good day for liberty. Deo Gratias!
