Homily #091025 ( 20min) Play – Jericho is a city that symbolizes sin while Jerusalem symbolizes virtue. Bartimaeus the blind man of Jericho was cured by our Lord, both physically in his eyes and spirtually in his heart, for he then left the blindness of the sins of Jericho and followed Our Lord into the promised land of the heavenly Jerusalem. Today this spiritual battle is still raging. Let us have the in-sight to turn our backs on sin and darkness, take up our cross, embrace sanctity and purity, and follow Our Lord into His Kingdom of Light.

Recording Failed – In today’s Gospel Our Lord brings salvation to Zacheus of Jericho. Fr. Bonaventure preaches on how Jericho is a symbol of sinfulness that has been conquered by Christ’s presence. This place was one of the most ancient cities in the world and was the lowest place below sea level that is inhabited by man and so is a symbol of Hell. The citizens were devotees of the lunar deities and practiced the associated vices, ones that would cause people to loose their mind, becoming literally lunatics.  He connects this with the culture of modern decadent cities using Chapter 2 of the Book of Wisdom and how Christ is needed just as before for bringing the Kingdom of God to these bastions of Satan.

Jericho is a symbol of the world of sin that will be destroyed at the end of time, and as Jesus passes through, He invites Himself to the infamous Zacchaeus’ home. This shows us that, though we tend to speak of seeking God, it is primarily God that seeks us. Jesus gave Zacchaeus hope, hope to escape the bleakness of sin and reform his life, a hope that brings with it the power of God. In evangelization, we need to spread this hope by the love in our lives, being an example of the God that seek us before we seek Him.
