May 20^th: St. Bernardine of Siena (1380-1444)

One Minute Meditation

This holy Franciscan priest had a particularly great love for the virtue of purity. It was only natural that he also had a most tender and deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was a gifted preacher who also spread the devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and is often depicted holding a sun-like staff with the “IHS” engraved on it.

PRAYER:

O Lord Jesus, who didst grant to St. Bernadine, Thy confessor, a very special love for Thy most holy Name, pour forth in us, we beseech Thee, through his merits and intercession, the spirit of Thy love. Who livest and reignest forever and ever. Amen.

St. Bernardine, help us to seek purity in our hearts and souls, in our words and in our deeds. May we grow in our love for Our Blessed Lady and for Our Lord, Jesus Christ, whose sacred Name we venerate.

Homily #110103 ( 10min) Play – On the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, Fr. Bonaventure preaches on the power of His name. The Jews never used the name of God because it implied a power over God. For this reason reverence should be exercised whenever invoking Jesus’ name and certainly we must avoid any misuses especially using it in vain or even in a blasphemous way.

A name signifies something of the essence of the child, and the name of Our Lord was preannounced, and therefore is even more particular and prophetic than any other. Jesus is the One Who Saves, and He is Emmanuel, God-with-us. Let us invoke this name with love and reverence for all our needs, and we will be heard by the Father.

Saint Bernardine of Siena was notable for his piety and purity from a young age. Even though he lost his parents early on, his extended family raised him and encouraged his devotion. He consecrated his vocation to Mary, whom he called “His Beloved,” and entered the Franciscans at 22 years of age. He could not preach effectively because his voice was weak and rough, but through the intervention of Mary it was made strong and melodious. He preached sternly, but always ended by speaking of the wonders of the Name of Jesus, the only name under which we can be saved. He would hold up an image of the Holy Name: IHS. One explanation is that it is Iesus Hominem Salvator (Latin for Jesus, Savior of men), but it is really the first three letters of Jesus in Greek: ??? or ???, later put into Latin characters.
Saint Bernardine promoted this now wide-spread devotion, and let us too show great reverence for the Holy Name, not only of Jesus, but of Jesus and Mary. Invoke these names with love in need and in gratitude, especially in reparation for the Holy Names being used flippantly, vainly, or even blasphemously.Ave Maria!
