One Minute Meditation

pentecost 2

O Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, make me docile to His divine motions.

MEDITATION from Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene OCD:

“The Blessed, Virgin Mary,” says St. Augustine, “was the only one who merited to be called the Mother and Spouse” of God. She became the Mother of God because she was the Spouse of the Holy Spirit: “the Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee” (Lk 1:35), said the Angel, explaining the mysterious, divine manner in which she would become a mother, the Mother of the Son of God. At that moment the Holy Spirit, who had already possessed Mary’s soul from the first moment of her Immaculate Conception, came upon her with such exceptional plenitude that He formed within her the sacred Body of Jesus.

Justly, therefore, does Mary deserve the name of Spouse of the Holy Spirit: she is His possession, His sanctuary, His temple. The divine Paraclete may well say to her in the words of the Canticle: “My sister, my spouse, is a garden end a fountain sealed up” (4:12). Mary is a garden enclosed:” because she was never defiled-even for an instant by the shadow of sin, was never subject to the winds of unruly passions, never taken up with any affection for creatures.

Filled with grace from her conception, Mary is always the faithful Spouse of the Holy Spirit, attentive docile to all His impulses and inspirations. If Mary’s sublime privileges are reserved for her at we can, nevertheless, imitate her interior dispositions: keeping our heart, in imitation of hers, always attentive and docile to the action of the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Francis Fernandez writes about the seven gifts

and their influence in the Christian life:

“But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me.” Our Lord announces this news in the Gospel, and the liturgy of the Church invites us, in various ways, to get our souls ready for the action of the Holy Spirit.

A resolute battle against every deliberate venial sin prepares us to receive the light and the protection of the Parac1ete, by means of his gifts. The light which is bestowed on our intellect makes us know and understand the things of God; the assistance to our will permits us to use successfully the opportunities for doing good which we encounter every day, and to reject the temptations of everything that would separate us from God.

The gift of understanding shows us the riches of the Faith with greater clarityThe gift of knowledge enables us to judge created things in an upright manner, and to keep our heart fixed on God, and on things insofar as they lead us to him. The gift wisdom enables us to comprehend the unfathomable wonder of God, and it urges us to seek him in preference to all other things, amid our ordinary work and obligations. The gift of counsel points out the paths of holiness to us.- God’s will Will in our ordinary daily life– and encourages us to choose the option which most closely coincides with the glory of God, and the good of our fellow man.

The gift of piety inclines us to treat God with the intimacy with which a child treats his father. The gift of fortitude uplifts us continually, helping us to overcome the difficulties which we inevitably meet on our journey to God. The gift of fear induces us to flee the occasions of sin, resist temptation and avoid every evil which could sadden the Holy Spirit, and to fear above all the loss of the One whom we love, and who is the reason of being of our life.

These are days to prepare for the celebration of the solemn sending out of the Holy Spirit on the Church, represented by the Apostles gathered in the Cenacle, along with Mary the Mother of God. We pray constantly that we may be docile to the work of the Holy Spirit in our soul, and that he may not cease to move and inspire the people of these times in which we live, who are particularly hungry for the Spirit, and so much need his protection and his help.

We tell him:

Come, 0 Holy Spirit, come,

And from thy celestial home

Shed a ray of light divine!

Come, thou Father of the poor,

Come, thou source of all our store,

Come, within our bosoms shine!

Thou on those who ever more

Thee confess and thee adore

I n thy sevenfold gifts descend;

Give them virtue’s sure reward,

Give them thy salvation , Lord,

Give them joy that never ends.

Recourse to Our Lady, the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, is the surest way for us to dispose our soul for whatever new gifts the Paraclete wishes to give us.

MY PEACE I GIVE TO YOU !

In the mouth of our Lord the ordinary Jewish greeting takes on its deepest meaning, because peace was one of the Messianic gifts par excellence. When bidding farewell to somebody who had done some good, our Lord often said: Go in peace.

He entrusts a mission of peace to his disciples. Whatever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house. To desire peace for others and to foster it in our surroundings is a great human good, and when it is inspired by charity, it is also a great supernatural good.

When our soul is at peace it is a clear sign that God is close to us; besides it is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, St Paul frequently exhorted the first Christians to live peaceful and happy lives: agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.

True peace is the result of holiness, the result of the struggle not to allow our love to be smothered by our disordered tendencies and our sins. When we love God, the soul is like a good tree, which is known by its fruits. Our actions reveal the presence of the Paraclete, and, insofar as they cause spiritual joy, they are called fruits of the Holy Spirit. One of these fruits is the peace of God, which passes all understanding, the true peace that Christ desired for the Apostles and for Christians of every era.

When God comes to you, you will feel the truth of these greetings: My peace I give to you … , peace I leave you … , peace be with you … , and you will feel it even in the midst of troubles. St Augustine describes true peace as tranquility in order, order between God and ourselves, order within ourselves and order in our relationships with others.

If we live that threefold order we will have peace, and we will transmit peace to others. Order towards God means that we are firmly determined to root all sin out of our lives and to center everything in Christ. Our Lord has entrusted to us the task of bringing peace to the world, starting by having peace in our own souls, and then in our family and place of work.

Sowers of peace and joy.

Christ is our peace. For twenty centuries he has been saying to us: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. He wants each of us to proclaim this to the whole world, by the way we live; to the world in which we live, even if at times it may seem rather small. The life of the first Christians helped many to discover the meaning of their existence. They brought peace to their families and to the society in which they lived.

In many inscriptions from that period we find greetings with which they desire peace to others. This peace – which is from God – will be found on earth as long as there are men and women of good will. Remembering that we are children of God will give us that solid peace, which isn’t disturbed by the ups and downs of our emotions or the events of the day: it will give us the serenity and steadiness which we need so much.

To ensure that we are open and friendly to everyone, we need to stamp out any kind of antipathy or animosity; it would indicate that we were not very supernatural in our dealings with others. We also need to fight against any roughness or sharpness in our character which could upset others and would indicate that we are not sufficiently mortified. We need to fight against selfishness and against love of comfort. These are serious obstacles to friendship and to effectiveness in the apostolate.

Let us have recourse to Mary, our Mother, so that we may never lose our joy and our serenity. Mary is the Queen of Peace, and thus the Church invokes her: So when your soul or your family are troubled, or things go wrong at world, in society or between nations, cry out to her without ceasing. Call to her by this title: ‘Regina Pacis, ora pro nobis! (Queen of Peace, pray for us) Have you at least tried it when you have lost your calm? You will be surprised at its immediate effect,

Fr. Francis Fernandez (In Conversation with God)

queen of peace

Queen of Peace, pray for us!

Consecration to the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, Divine Spirit of light and the love I consecrate to you my understanding, heart, and will, my whole being, for time and for eternity. May my understanding be always submissive to your heavenly inspirations and to the teaching of the Catholic Church, of which you are the infallible Guide. May my heart be ever inflamed with the love of God and of my neighbor. May my will be ever conformed to the Divine Will. May my whole life be faithful to the imitation of the life and virtues of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom with the Father and You be honor and glory forever.

God, Holy Spirit, Infinite Love of the Father and the Son, through the pure hands of Mary, Your Immaculate Spouse, I place myself this day, and all the days of my life, upon your chosen altar, the Divine Heart of Jesus, as a sacrifice to you, consuming fire, being firmly resolved now more than ever to hear Your voice and to do in all things Your most holy and adorable will.

For the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Blessed Spirit of Wisdom, Help me to seek God. Make Him the center of my life and order my life to Him, so that love and harmony may reign in my soul.

Blessed Spirit of Understanding, enlighten my mind, that I may know and love the truths of faith and make them truly my own.

Blessed Spirit of Counsel, enlighten and guide me in all my ways, that I may know and do Your holy Will. Make me prudent and courageous.

Blessed Spirit of Fortitude, uphold my soul in every time of trouble or adversity. Make me loyal and confident.

Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, help me to know good from evil. Teach me to do what is right in the sight of God. Give me clear vision and firmness in decision.

Blessed Spirit of Piety, possess my heart, incline it to a true faith in You, to a holy love of You, my God, that with my whole soul I may seek You, Who are my Father, and I find You, my best, my truest joy.

Blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart that I may be mindful of Your presence. Make me fly from sin, and give me intense reverence for God and for my fellow men who are made in God’s image.

Come Holy Spirit, Creator blest! And in our souls take up Your rest; Come with Your grace and heavenly aid, To fill the hearts which you have made.

O Comforter, to you do we cry, O heavenly Gift of God Most High; O Fount of life and Fire of love, And sweet Anointing from above!
