The Roving Reporter caught up with Peter Wolfgang, president of the Family Institute of Connecticut, at the Rally for Marriage on Sunday Sept 28, at the Connecticut State Capitol building in Hartford. Listen as he describes this most successful event with over 3,000 attendees in a true grass roots movement pitted against numerous, well-moneyed special interest groups, and how they sent a clear message to the State Legislature and Supreme Court to uphold traditional marriage.

Well, we’re going to do it. Yes, the Public Hearing has been canceled by the Democratically controlled Judiciary Committee. I guess they got scared. But, there will be an “informational” hearing (less official) held by the Republicans (to save the day) and also a Catholic rally at the Capitol Building itself starting at noon. The Bishops are encouraging everyone to attend. See Details. We will find out more about what this cancellation means when we get there tomorrow. We will be covering some preliminary events at the Legislative Office Building (LOB) at 11am then the rally at noon, then at 1:30 we will go back to the LOB to cover the hearing, from there we will see how our batteries hold up.

We will have a post on AirMaria in the morning that will have the live video embedded. If AirMaria gets too sluggish then you can go directly to our channel on Ustream.tv at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/airmaria-live although watch out for the adverts and such that we don’t have any control over.

Also, because of this event, we will not have a homily tomorrow.

Keep in mind we have not gotten a chance to go to the capitol to measure cellular and wireless strength so it will be hit or miss. 80% chance of rain, so bring your cyber umbrellas. Those going to the Capitol in person will definitely have a chance to do some Lenten penance in reparation for this political atrocity.

Connecticut Judiciary Committee can’t seem to take a hint. Now they’ve introduced Bill 1138 for Euthanasia!! Have they totally lost their minds in Hartford??!!! Let me guess … Lawlor and McDonald. They’re the only ones with the gall to do this. If I read their site correctly, the hearing will be on Friday, March 20th 10am in LOB Room 2D.

Well, it was a busy day! At about 7am we found out that the Judiciary Committee headed by McDonald and Lawlor (who pushed the anti-Catholic bill sb1098 a couple of weeks ago) had another surprise hearing at 12 noon today. We were not the only ones who were surprised. Even Senators and Representatives in the same committee were surprised. This time it was to be the vote on SB899 which is the legislative codification of the Kerrigan Supreme Court of CT case that brought in same-sex ‘marriage’.  We rushed to put together our live streaming equipment that was in total disarray from our live streaming of the Youth Pro-life Conference on Saturday. We threw everything into the car, including ourselves and headed off to Hartford, an hour away, only to find out that we had to wait another hour while the  committee went into private caucus sessions until 1pm. Although we were caught off guard it seemed that the other side, in favor of the bill, was there in force. We are never out numbered at these events. Seems they got the word and we did not. Funny that! It was the beginning of a difficult, often nauseating day listening to Senators and Representatives squashing every single effort to protect religious liberties (except one) by pummeling those that were proposing very reasonable amendments with thousands of inane questions. The result is that we have about the same protections of our rights to conscientious objections as did Massachusetts where Catholic Charities had to cease their child adoption efforts because the state was forcing them to place kids with same sex couples. We live streamed the Religious Liberty Rally and Debate at the State Capitol of Connecticut in Hartford today. It was a rally that was announced by FIC on short notice due to the unprecedented onslaught of anti-family legislation introduced by the Judicial Committee in the last few weeks, so the crowds were low, but even still there were over 125 people on this cold, cloudy, spring weekday. The talks were very inspirational with Peter Wolfgang of FIC, Sen Michael McLachlan, Rep. Bruce Morris, and Rev. Eric Thompson. After the rally there was a well attended debate held by the Federalist Society between Prof. Susan Schmeiser/UConn Law and Prof. Robin Wilson/Washington & Lee Law at the Capitol Building. Although the debate was not very stimulating since both debaters were largely in agreement, they did discuss the very timely issues of how to apply the Kerrigan Supreme Court Case that gave CT same-sex marriage. A very informative Day.

Bill O’Brien, President of Connecticut Right to Life talks about the very busy upcoming legislative session in Hartford. Mentions some pro-life legislation that they are trying to start. This includes a parental notification law for abortion for minors which CT is only one of six states that do not have one. It is easier to get an abortion in CT Schools without parental consent than it is to get Tylenol. This is very important even for the safety of the child in regard to prompt response to medical and emotional complications due to the abortion. And also important in regard to child sexual abuse being exposed. Ironically, this all points out that the Pro-abortion movement ends up being oppressive to women rather than Pro-choice.

On the defensive side he hopes to stop an education standards bill that will require all students to have comprehensive sex education (under the cover of “Health Education”) with no ability to opt out. He points out the very high rate of teen pregnancy and this after many years of sex education.

Fr. Tony DiMarco of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants discusses with Corinn Dahm the many pro-life efforts they engage in including praying, protesting, sidewalk counseling, volunteering for local pregnancy crisis centers, The Forty-Days-for-Life and their local Pro-life March in Hartford, CT where he hopes to have about 1500 participants who will attend Mass on Saturday, January 21 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hartford and then march together to the state capitol building with many prayers and pro-life talks. This march is for those who can’t afford the time, money or time off work to got to the big March for Life in DC which is always on a weekday.

On January 20, 2012 the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), under Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, unveiled a new policy which has come to be known at the “HHS Mandate.”

The new Mandate would requiring nearly all private health insurance plans to include coverage for all FDA-approved prescription contraceptive drugs and devices, surgical sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs—drugs that interfere with implantation in the womb and therefore destroy the life of a human being in the earliest stage of development.
