Highlights from the Solemn High Mass according to the Extraordinary Form, celebrated in Saint John Lateran Basilica, by the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Immaculate. All sacred music sung by the Friars and Sisters (Polyphony and Gregorian Chant) This is the first time that the traditional Mass has been celebrated in the pope’s chair since Vatican II. For this Month of November let us remember the Souls in purgatory and pray so that we too are prepared for our coming judgment. And for your meditation:

Dies iræ ! dies illa

Solvet sæclum in favilla:

Teste David cum Sibylla !

The day of wrath, that day

Will dissolve the world in ashes

As foretold by David and the sibyl!

Quantus tremor est futurus,

Quando iudex est venturus,

Cuncta stricte discussurus !

How much tremor there will be,

when the judge will come,

investigating everything strictly!

Tuba, mirum spargens sonum

–

Per sepulchra regionum,

Coget omnes ante thronum.

The trumpet, scattering

a wondrous sound

through the sepulchres of the regions,

will summon all before the throne.

Mors stupebit, et natura,

Cum resurget creatura,

Iudicanti responsura.

Death and nature will marvel,

when the creature arises,

to respond to the Judge.

Liber scriptus proferetur,

In quo totum continetur,

The written book will be brought forth,

In honor of the feast of one of the patrons of our FI house of studies (S.T.I.M.) here in Italy, we present this video of the Holy Mass celebrated in 2010 in Rome in the extraordinary form, with our co-founder Father Gabriele. It’s a mixture of highlights and music from the Mass, as well as some thoughts from our blessed scholastic philosopher/theologian, who died in 1308. The text is in both Italian and English.

Long live the Virgin of Virgins, mother of the Creator.

As we celebrate Pentecost, may we call down the Holy Spirit with the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate!

VENI, Sancte Spiritus, et emitte caelitus lucis tuae radium.	COME, Holy Ghost, send down those beams, which sweetly flow in silent streams from Thy bright throne above.
Veni, pater pauperum, veni, dator munerum veni, lumen cordium.	O come, Thou Father of the poor; O come, Thou source of all our store, come, fill our hearts with love.
Consolator optime, dulcis hospes animae, dulce refrigerium.	O Thou, of comforters the best, O Thou, the soul’s delightful guest, the pilgrim’s sweet relief.

This wonderful hymn of Our Lady, is attributed to the Carmelite Order. The hymn “Salve Mater Misericordiae” expresses devotion to Mary as a solicitous Mother who cares for the needs of her children. Enjoy!
