Ave Maria!

Dawn Eden, who last year gave us the great story of her conversion through St. Maximilian Kolbe and G.K. Chesterton, recently returned to Griswold, CT, and we accosted her for another interview which she graciously granted. This time she talks about her studies for her Masters in Moral Theology at Dominican House of Studies in DC  and how they relate to current issues in our society. In particular she refers to the recent debate on Christopher West’s interpretation of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. She relates what she has found about how morality was taught before and after the Second Vatican Council and how this compares with West’s assertion that Catholic morality was very prudish before the Council. It was this assertion that was the basis for his very controversial Nightline interview where he favorably compared John Paul II to Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy, since both, in their own way, saved us from this supposed prudery. Listen to Dawn’s fair, informative analysis of this controversy.

Fr. Alan reflects on mercy in the homily for Monday of the Second Week in Lent (Mar 09, 2020). Noting that Our Lord in today’s Gospel calls us to the practice of mercy, and that in the first reading, Daniel acknowledges sin, Father Alan points out that confessing sin is the prerequisite for receiving mercy.

The more insistent and urgent the messages from on high regarding mercy, the more we should understand the gravity of sin. To make it clear, in our times, recent popes have focused on both mercy and reconciliation, and Our Lord Himself gave to St. Faustina the urgent message of Divine Mercy, to “prepare the world for My final coming” (Diary of St. Faustina, 429).

“If my people will not submit, I shall be forced to let go the arm of my Son. It is so strong, so heavy that I can no longer withhold it.” Our Blessed Lady, La Salette, France, 1846

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on May 22, 2020, on how the morals of the world are reversed, praising what displeases God because it does not know the Lord. Fr. exhorts to hate the world, as in sin, but at the same time love the world, as in people, even those who sin and this is the key to joy.

Ave Maria Meditations

The Blessed Virgin Mary is born to be Mother. The supreme consolation that Our Lady receives at the Cross of her Son is the assurance that her vocation as Mother does not end with Christ’s death. The Lord commands the world, “Behold your Mother.” The resurrection begins for Mary, and for us, with these words.

The Blessed Virgin’s womb remains forever fruitful. Mary leads us to Christ, but Christ leads us back to His Mother, for without Mary’s maternity, Jesus would become a mere abstraction to us.

The Lord wills to “let His face shine upon” us through the face of the Mother of God. We serve a Mother who seems to grow more beautiful as new generations rise up and call her blessed.
