Ave Maria!

Fr. Angelo addresses the misconception that the discipline of withholding communion from obstinate and notorious sinners is somehow uncharitable. He takes Fr. John Hardon as his starting point to show that, in the right measure, it is the epitome of charity. To put it in a nutshell, he brings up Dietrich Von Hildebrand’s interesting phrase, “Charitable Anathema.” Fr. Angelo presents Archbishop Burke as a good example for our consideration.

Statue of St. Joseph and the Christ Child in the crypt church at St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, founded by St. Andre Bessette.

Dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to your service. I give myself to you, that you always be my father, my protector and my guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me a great purity of heart, a fervent love of the interior life, and the spirit of prayer.

After your example may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And you, blessed St. Joseph, pray for me, that I might share in the peace and joy of your holy death. Amen.

Ave Maria Meditations

All we have to do, therefore, is act on our belief and open our minds in prayer. The moment we begin to pray our minds are open. And as long as we remain in the posture of prayer, whether we are conscious of it or not, whether we realize it or not, the Spirit of Christ is speaking to our spirit. We make ourselves aware of God and He pours in His divine wisdom.

Once thus enlightened, we must act on what we believe is God’s way of teaching us. Do not let these divinely inspirited ideas remain sterile on the mind! They are there to be fructified in action: to be put into practice.  Those who believe this and act on their belief achieve great things for the extension of the kingdom of Christ, as witness those great men and women who never doubted that they were following Christ when they followed the illuminations He inspired in their minds during prayer.

Ave Maria Meditations

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11)

Our present meditation and reflection is on the Second Glorious Mystery, the Ascension of Our Lord from earth to Heaven. With this, the Second Glorious Mystery, we complete our reflections on Christ’s sensibly perceptible stay on earth. When God became Man He began His earthly and, I qualify, sensibly perceptible Presence when He was conceived by Mary at Nazareth.

As we begin this meditation, I cannot exaggerate the importance of realizing that for thirty some years God became Man and was on earth visibly, sensibly perceptible – that since the Ascension God become Man, I repeat become Man, is indeed in Heaven at the Right hand of His heavenly Father, but He is also and that word also is at the heart of our Catholic Faith – He is also on the earth in the Holy Eucharist. Christ then completed this earthly and I then repeat visibly perceptible stay, He completed this kind of earthly stay on Ascension Thursday forty days after Easter.

Jesus Christ Is Alive and Present on Earth

We’re still on the introduction. It is also critically important to stress that once Christ rose from the dead, Jesus Christ remains Jesus Christ. The only difference and the only limitation is on our side. He did, indeed, ascend to Heaven but I repeat and it is no mere verbal repetition; the Catholic Church is only, underline the adverb, only as strong as her bishops, priests, religious and the laity believe that Jesus Christ is alive and is present on earth, True God and True Man, in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.

But that the same identical Jesus Christ – shall we say also, let’s drop the word also – is present in Heaven. In Heaven He is seen by the angels and saints. On earth, He is seen only with the eyes of Faith, but objectively, really It is the same Jesus in Heaven since His Ascension and on earth in the Eucharist.

Ave Maria Meditations

Is it any wonder the Church calls the Eucharist, Myterium Fidei, the mystery of faith? Those who accept the Real Presence accept by implication all the cardinal mysteries of Christianity. They believe in the Trinity, in the Father who sent the Son and in the (proceeding) of the Holy Spirit. They believe in the incarnation, that the Son of God became man like one of us. They believe in Christ’s divinity since no one but God could change bread and wine into His own Body and Blood. They believe in the holy Catholic Church which Christ founded and in which through successive generations is communicated to bishops and priests the incredible power of making Christ continually present among us in the Blessed Sacrament.

LITANY OF REPARATION FOR SACRILEGES AGAINST JESUS IN THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT:

Lord, have mercy on us;
Christ, have mercy on us;
Lord, have mercy on us;
God the Father of Mercy, Have mercy on us.
God the Son, Mediator between God and man,
Have mercy on us.
God the Holy Spirit, the Enlightener of hearts,
Have mercy on us.
Holy and undivided Trinity, Have mercy on us.

O Sacred Host! Victim of reparation for the sins of the world, Have mercy on us.
O Sacred Host! Annihilated on the altar for us and by us, Have mercy on us.
O Sacred Host! Despised and neglected, Have mercy on us.
O Sacred Host! Neglected and abandoned in Your temples, Have mercy on us.
Be merciful unto us: Spare us, O Lord.
Be merciful unto us: Hear us, O Lord.

(Response: We offer You our reparations, O Lord)

For so many unworthy Communions
For the irreverence of Christians,
For the continual blasphemies of the impious,
For the infamous discourses made in Your Holy Temples,
For the crimes of sinners,
For the sacrileges which profane Your sacrament of love,
For the coldness of the greater part of Your children,
For their contempt of Your loving invitations,
For the infidelity of those who call themselves Your
friends,
For the abuse of Your grace,
For our unfaithfulness,
For our delay in loving You,
For our tepidity in Your Holy Service,
For Your bitter sadness at the loss of souls,
For Your long waiting at the door of our hearts,
For Your loving sighs,
For Your loving tears,
For Your loving imprisonment,
For Your loving death,

(Response: We sinners beseech You, hear us)

That You spare us, that You hear us,
That You will make known Your love for us in this most
Holy Sacrament,
That You will vouchsafe to accept our reparation, made in
the spirit of humility.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world:
Spare us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world: Graciously hear us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world:
Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, Who has chosen to expose Yourself to all the outrages of the impious, rather than withdraw Your Sacred Body from our Churches, grant us the grace to bewail, with true bitterness of heart, the injuries and sacrileges committed against you, and to repair as far as lies in our power, and with sincere love, the many ignominies and contempts You have received, and still continue to receive, in this ineffable mystery, Who lives and reigns with God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

Ave Maria!

Cardinal Burke at the Day of Reflection for Laity with the theme, “Holy Matrimony: Sacrament of Christ in His Church, (Eph 5:32)” at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center in Bloomington, IN on October 10, 2015, gives the second talk on Fr. John Hardon and his Catechisis on Marriage. He presents the need for good catechesis on marriage as an antidote to modern moral confusion and points out that much of the confusion among Catholics is due to poor catechesis in schools and parishes over the past fifty years.

Ave Maria Meditations

Eucharistic Jesus, we thank You for instituting Your Real Presence on earth (in the Blessed Sacrament). Thanks to this great Gift, we can speak to You just as truly as the apostles spoke to You in Palestine. You can hear us now no less than You heard those who came to You during Your  physical presence on earth. We know You are our God whose love inspired You to give us Yourself (so that we can) come to You, present among us but visible to our eyes of faith. We know You will hear us as surely as You heard Your disciples 2000 years ago. Why? Because we believe. Amen.

Declared Patron Saint of Catholic Writers by Pope Pius XI in 1923, St. Francis de Sales was an exemplary practitioner of what Fr. John Hardon called the writing apostolate. By means of writing, this Bishop and Doctor of the Church was able to effect the conversion of tens of thousands of Calvinists who had no other means of receiving the Catholic truth. St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe continued the tradition of Catholic publishing by modern means, and so do the Franciscans of the Immaculate, through a variety of social communications media.
