Ave Maria Meditations

Just as in the imitation of Mary, so in the matter of trust in her, our attitude cannot be exactly the same as that of Jesus. Our trust in the Blessed Virgin is most evident in our requests for supernatural graces. Obviously, it was Mary who solicited spiritual favors from Jesus-not Jesus from Mary. Nonetheless, it remains true that Jesus did entrust Himself to His Mother and so, here too, even if not completely reproducing Jesus’ attitude as such, we can at least draw inspiration from it. Jesus entrusted Himself to His Mother for His bodily needs. He who feeds the little birds and clothes the lilies of the field with splendor willed to need the same material help that every human infant does. He has no worries: His Mother will feed Him, clothe Him, and give Him shelter. That His life is in jeopardy? It matters not! Mary will carry Him far away into a strange country, while He sleeps peacefully in her arms.

Jesus entrusted Himself to Mary for the fulfillment of prophecies: He was to be born in Bethlehem, to be recalled from Egypt; Mary would see to it.  He entrusted Himself to Mary for the accomplishment of His mission. Scarcely incarnated, He wants to sanctify His precursor, to show Himself to the Jews and the Magi, to Simeon and to Anna: He relies on Mary for all these events. He wills to associate His Mother in His redemptive mission in view of her cooperation in unceasing prayer and unspeakable sufferings: Mary understands perfectly and generously consents.

He entrusted Mary with the preservation of His work. Mary accepts the souls He redeems as her own children; she envelops with her special solicitude the apostles He exhorts to continue His apostolate; and after her glorious Assumption, she will never cease to help distribute His graces and protect the Church, the Spouse of Christ.

Was there ever a child who entrusted himself, with such good reason, to the care of his mother? Our imitation of Jesus’ trust in His Mother brings a particularly notable joy to Our Lord and to Mary: to Our Lord, because He rejoices at seeing us full of faith in the power and goodness of His Mother, and in His love for her. And He rejoices to be able, because of her, to spread more abundantly the graces He purchased at the price of His Blood. He so loves to give! From that attitude comes His insistence in pressing us to ask, to seek, to knock. Our trust in Mary allows Him to fully satisfy this need of His Heart. And He also knows that our trust in Mary, through the wonders she obtains for us, will increase our filial piety towards her all the more.

Our trust brings a great consolation to Mary, who is as happy as any mother to see that her children trust in her love; happy as Mother of Sorrows to be able to distribute those graces which she earned with her crucified Son, from whom she received the mission to distribute; happy, above all, to be able to help us in this way to better love Jesus and souls.

For our part, trusting in Mary brings us all the good things we could hope for: temporal favors, even miracles if necessary; above all, supernatural graces of all kinds; assured victory over any temptation; success in the struggle against our faults, in the acquisition of virtues, in apostolic undertakings, in the very conquest of sanctity! All these hopes are permitted to him who puts his trust in Mary and, consequently, all blessings are assured to him.

Motives for Trusting in Mary

To be authentic, trust presupposes the presence of three conditions: 1) that the person upon whom we wish to rely knows our needs and hears our pleas for help; 2) that he can actually help us; 3) that he wishes to help us. To what degree are these three conditions present in our relationship with Mary?

In considering her function as Mediatrix we have shown elsewhere how, even in her contemplation of God, the Blessed Virgin clearly sees all our needs and hears all our prayers. We just need now to consider her power and her will to come to our help.

Can Mary help us?

She can indeed help us: first of all, by the same right as the other saints who, through their intercession with God, obtain innumerable favors for their clients. Just think of the unceasing “showers of roses” which the young Saint of Lisieux causes to fall upon her devotees. But just as Mary is holier than all God’s other servants, the intercessory power of the Mother of God exceeds that of the saints in the same proportion. In this general sense, Mary can already do more by herself than all the other saints combined. Fr. Emile Neubert SM  (Devotion to Mary)

 One Minute Meditation

Usefulness of Devotion to Mary for Sanctification

One of the most excellent means of salvation, devotion to Mary, is also the surest, the easiest, and the shortest way to perfection. That statement is generally accepted in the spiritual realm today and finds a striking confirmation in experience.

Pope Pius X teaches it ex professo in his Encyclical Ad diem ilium of February 2, 1904, in which he encourages the faithful to practice devotion to Mary as the most excellent means “to restore all things in Christ,” according to the motto he had adopted.

“For can anyone fail to see” he writes, that there is no surer or more direct road than Mary for uniting all mankind in Christ and obtaining through Him the perfect adoption of sons, that we may be holy and immaculate in the sight of God? .. the Son of God made man, being the ‘author and consummator of our faith’; it surely follows that His most holy Mother should be recognized as participating in the divine mysteries and, in a sense, having custody over them; and that the edifice of the Faith of all centuries rises upon her (as upon a foundation) who is the noblest after Christ…since Divine Providence has been pleased that we should have the Man-God through Mary, who conceived Him by the Holy Ghost and bore Him [at] her breast, it only remains for us to receive Christ from the hands of Mary…no one ever knew Christ so profoundly as she did, and no one can ever be more competent as a guide and teacher of the knowledge of Christ …. Hence it follows … that the Virgin is more powerful than all others as a means for uniting mankind with Christ.

She provides the most sure and efficacious assistance to us for arriving at the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. Alas! Those seduced by the wiles of the demon or deceived by false doctrines, furnish us with peremptory proof of it by their conduct, thinking they can do without the help of the Virgin. Hapless are they who neglect Mary under pretext of the honor to be paid to Jesus Christ! As if the Child could be found elsewhere than with the Mother!

Ave Maria Meditations

Haste is not one of those disordered tendencies of the soul, such as pride etc… But rather it is a defect caused by nervousness and we must learn to check haste at all times. Haste prevents every natural and supernatural activity from producing its full effect…Almost every language has one or two proverbs which point up the harmful effects of haste.

A person in a hurry performs a multitude of useless movements, grows tired, spoils his work, and is often obliged to do it over completely… From the spiritual viewpoint the damage caused by haste is still more disastrous. Whoever is precipitate is subject to incessant distractions; only the calm man is able to keep the eye of the soul fixed upon supernatural realities but the impetuous person hardly knows what intimate contact with God is. Such a person is rarely directed by the Holy Spirit Who speak softly and is inaudible amid agitation…haste prevents full fruitfulness in apostolic enterprises.

The impetuous person is in a hurry to execute an idea as soon as it presents itself, and is in just as much of a hurry to abandon it; he speaks before he thinks, acts imprudently, and compromises the success of the finest work. Tranquility, though not a virtue, is the indispensable condition of holiness and a full apostolic fruitfulness.

How can we overcome this deadly defect (of haste)? There are natural and supernatural ways. Here we shall consider only the Marian means, namely, the imitation of Mary and recourse to her. We should contemplate her, recollected and absorbed in the thought of God whose tabernacle she is, and who dwells in us also. We should also imitate her spirits of order.  Should we feel hurried, we can perhaps pause a moment to reestablish our serenity close to Mary. A quick glance at Mary to see how she would act in our place because Jesus’ pleasure is sufficient. And then on with the action, a bit more slowly perhaps, in order to fix our whole attention on what we are doing. But it should be a calm, loving attention.

As one busy priest noted: “When I deliberately try to be (as) Mary doing the good pleasure of her Son, I am perfect master of myself and I soon can go ahead with my work more perfectly then when I do not have the time to begin in her name. Especially when I have little time I ought to say: be careful; you have so much to do; let her take over that you will be able to do it all. ”

A final suggestion: We should aim always at doing what we are doing under the direction of Mary.

Fr. Emile Neubert (from Life of Union with Mary)

Ave Maria Meditations

The love of Marian souls for their heavenly Mother is not the only love that finds a marvelous increase in their union with her; their love for Jesus increases even more! All that we do for the Blessed Virgin brings us closer to Jesus, at least in an indirect way.

Is it not because of Him that we love her, that we revere her, that we pray to her?  More often, however, union with Mary puts us directly in contact with Jesus. But that does not suffice for Mary. She wishes to do more than lead us to her Son without, as it were, our knowing it; she desires a determination on our part that is deliberate, really consented to, and fully conscious.

Mary was created and exists only for her Son. As formerly on earth, so now in heaven, she thinks only of giving Jesus to the world. To help her other children grow more and more in the love of Jesus and spread this love about them is her supreme desire in their regard. And the supreme desire of her earthly children must be to love and to have Jesus loved under the leadership of Mary.

At the Fall 2019 Marian Day at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center, gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Oct 05, 2019 on how people have great trouble answering the simple questions “Who are you?” and the this is because we are not familiar with ourselves because we are not familiar with how God made us to be happy with Him for all time. We must therefore learn to be children of God like the humble saints like St. Therese of Lisieux. He refers to the book “My Ideal, Jesus, Son of Mary” https://academyoftheimmaculate.com/products/my-ideal-jesus-son-of-mary. He also relates how Mary worked in his life and his family and the best way to be a Child of Mary is through reciting the Rosary.

In the homily on Wednesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time (Feb 12, 2020), Fr. Matthias expounds on Our Lord’s teaching from today’s Gospel. Jesus instructs: “Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile” (Mk 7:18). Citing an example from real life, Father explains that we can sin in the heart, in our thoughts, even if the sin does not manifest in exterior action. To overcome interior sin, we should live in interior union with Our Lady, who instructs, corrects, guides, and teaches us interior purity of heart. This is the ultimate secret to virtue in act.
