The Fortnight for Freedom starts today across the country from June 21st to July 4th to help preserve our most precious constitutional freedom, freedom of religion.

I’m getting excited about this Fortnight for Freedom kicking off tomorrow (on my patron saint’s feast day!) so to prepare I’ve been doing some reading on it.

(I presume at this point you’ve already seen CatholicVote’s new video promoting the Fortnight and have shared it with all of your friends and family. good.)

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty

O God our Creator,

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,

you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,

bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel

to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us

in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.

Give us the strength of mind and heart

to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;

give us courage in making our voices heard

on behalf of the rights of your Church

and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,

a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters

gathered in your Church

in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,

so that, with every trial withstood

and every danger overcome—

for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,

and all who come after us—

this great land will always be “one nation, under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Now that we’re officially into the Fortnight for Freedom, it’s appropriate to reflect on how the themes of religious liberty, moral conscience and commitment to one’s faith in the face of pressure and persecution have been reflected in film.

Below, Register film critic Steven D. Greydanus has chosen a fortnight of worth films providentially accompanying the saint’s days we will mark within these two weeks, making a perfect complement to your Fortnight of Freedom plans.

You can find many of these films on the 1995 Vatican film list and on the Register’s list of 100 pro-Catholic movies. All 14 films are available on home video (DVD and/or Blu-ray).
