Homily #140506n ( 09min) Play – In the first reading, we hear the account of the first Christian martyr. Fr. Matthias takes the opportunity to reflect over martyrdom, emphasizing that we still live in an Age of Martyrdom, and that not only Catholics are being martyrs, but all Christians. Using a phrase from Pope Francis, “Ecumenism of Blood,” he suggests that the growing persecution of Christians will forge paths towards unity.

Homily #150125n ( 22min) Play – Father takes the time to comment on the Church, pulling from Scripture, the Catechism, and recent comments from Pope Francis. He tells us that the world was created for the Church, that one cannot be fully Christian outside of the Catholic Church, that God desires all Christians to live in unity of faith, sacraments, and governance under the maternal care of the Catholic Church, which finds its principle, as St. Therese teaches us, in Charity. Finally, he stressed that the Church is made visible not in buildings but in our lives, and we must testify to it by living the Love of Christ, even our enemies. And the best way to do this is to place ourselves fully under the care of the Immaculate Virgin and allow her to form us into true children of the Church.

Ave Maria!

At the Symposium “Sursum Actio” at Notre Dame Univ. from Jun 8-9, 2015, in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner, F.I.,  Fr. Christiaan Kappes, S.L.D., from the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Ss. Cyril and Methodius, gives the tenth conference which he titles, “Nazianzen’s Prepurified Virgin in Augustine, through Maximus and Theodore of Canterbury, into Visigoth and Anglo-Saxon Tradition”. He traces the roots of the Catholic doctrine of the Immaculate Conception to the Eastern Father St. Gregory of Nazianzen and his doctrine of Mary being prepurified.  He points out that the Eastern idea of Mary’s purification in the Bible includes Jesus’ purification as well. Thus this positive idea of purification does not suggest any impurity in Mary which is one of the early objections to the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception in the West. He starts with Fr. Peter’s insights into the roots of the Immaculate Conception in Eastern Theology sighting his book The Immaculate Conception which he wrote with the help of Fr. Peter and was published by the Academy of the Immaculate. He then uses copious quotes and historical facts to trace the linkage of these roots  to the West and finally to England where the doctrine is given local acceptance and finally theological support from Bl. John Duns Scotus, paving the way for its dogmatic proclamation in 1854. This has Ecumenical considerations in regard to the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception and the Eastern Orthodox. The outline is as follows:

Part I – Fehlner and the Immaculata in Byzantium – 7:43

Part II – The Prepurification or Purified Virgin in Byzantium – 11:06

Part III -The Prepurified Virgin in the West, namely Augustine – 19:20

Part IV – The Prepurified Virgin of the Lateran Council 649 and Maximus the Confessor – 28:08

Part V – Prepurified Virgin in Anglo-Saxon England – 38:12

He includes quotes from:

Maximus the Confessor – Lateran Council of 649, Third Council of Constantinople in 680, Gregory Palamas and Palamite theology, Mark of Ephesus, Ildefonsus of Toledo, St. Gregory Naziansen, John Damascene, Mark of Ephesus, St. Augustine of Hippo, Rufinius Latinus, Theodore of Tarsius (Theodore of Canterbury), Sophronius of Jerusalem, Ephraim Greckus, Venerable Bede, St. John Damascene, Paschasius Radbertus who wrote  de Partu Virginis

The talk is followed by a commentary by Fr. Peter and then a round table discussion with the other presenters:

Fr. Peter: At council of Florence, Franciscans and the Greeks Palamites verses the Dominicans under John Torquemada who tried to condemn the Scotists and the Palamites
Only now is the value of Gregory Palamas and the Palamite school being recognized in the West.

Fr. Christiaan Kappes’ book: The Immaculate Conception, Why Thomas Aquinas Denied, while John Duns Scotus, Gregory Palamas and Mark Eugenicus Professed the Absolute Immaculate existence of the Virgin Mary.

Also mentioned: Fehlner, Peter Damian M. “De metaphysica mariana quaedam” (Metaphysical Mariology) In Immaculata Mediatrix 1, no.1 (2001): 13-42.

This symposium, Sursum Actio (“Lift up your Actions” or more loosely “Lift up your Hearts”), was organized in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner after he won the Cardinal John J. Wright Marialogical Award of 2015 from the Mariological Society of America for his outstanding contributions to Mariology.

Ave Maria!  A Christian ecumenical group has just released an anthology of writings about the Virgin Mary from a variety of denominations.  This is intriguing, because many Protestants show an aversion to talking about the Virgin Mary much.  The publication of an inter-denominational collection of writings about her could pave the way to increased dialogue and understanding.

Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania, an ecumenical group, has published the second volume in a series of collected writings by local preachers — this one about the Virgin Mary.

“Blessed Art Thou Among Women: Southwest Pennsylvania Preaches on Mary, Mother of Jesus” brings together the work of 19 bishops, priests, pastors, deacons and the vowed religious from throughout the region.

The authors represent several Christian traditions, including American Baptist, Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Mennonite, Presbyterian and Eastern Orthodox.

The book is available for free download at www.casp.org/sermons . Printed copies are available for a small fee.

“The breadth of perspectives in this volume is truly remarkable,” said the Rev. Liddy Barlow, CASP executive minister and the book’s editor. “Whether they are writing about the Annunciation narrative in Luke, or John’s account of the Crucifixion, about special days such as the Feast of the Presentation, or apparitions at Fatima or Guadalupe, these writers use their knowledge and creativity to introduce us to the Theotokos, Mary, a young woman who became Mother of God.”

In the homily for Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent (Apr 10), Fr. Matthias explains Jesus’ words to the Jews in today’s Gospel: “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are trying to kill me” (Jn 8:39-40).

The true descendants of Abraham are those who inherit his faith and works – they are God’s chosen people and heirs of His promises.

Msgr. Arthur B. Calkins gives the first homily at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Crosse, WI on Oct 11, 2019, at our Symposium “Mary Coredemptrix: Why the Dogma?” where he explains how we need to focus on Mary whom he relates to the new earth, descending from heaven as a holy city as depicted in the book of Revelations in the readings today, and to the Annunciation. From this, he expounds on Mary’s Immaculate Conception and how she is the New Eve, the Handmaid of the Lord who could cooperate in a unique way with Christ’s work of becoming a slave to set us free. Upon this, the Coredemption of Mary is based, which ultimately rests on the Absolute Primacy of Christ. As such, to deny the Coredemption of Mary is to deny Christ as outlined by Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner.

This symposium took place at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe October 11-12, 2019 and had 8 talks, 2 QA sessions, and 2 Homilies. The theme was “Mary Coredemptrix: Why the Dogma?” and included a commemoration of the Marian legacy of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner. It was sponsored by the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in conjunction with Mark Miravalle and the International Marian Association (IMA)
